I'm only on the 2nd chapter and there are already a handful of things I don't recall: The Rift Thaidakar Restares Sons of Honor Axindweth I've no memories of these things other than the names. Time to do a deep recap of RoW
I looked away quick but TIL that quoting spoilers will (now obvious in hindsight) show the spoilers LOL. Don't do that people. I just started rhythm of war and am pretty much off Instagram and reddit to avoid spoilers for WAT. You are all great at hiding stuff so I'll pop in occasionally but really not much. Quick thoughts - I LOVED Dawnshard and thought it was a fantastic novella with some very intriguing cosmere stuff going on and unlike Edgedancer, I enjoyed the detour with this set of characters. Great pacing and length. My buddy who got me into Sanderson said that ROW is his least favorite Sanderson book out of everything (bar maybe Elantris - his words only) so we'll see how I feel. I'm travelling on the 23rd and will have a LONG day of train travel, so I'd like to be done with ROW by then and sink my teeth into WAT... That's 100 pages a day... to get through ROW which is ambitious but I also need to set better and healthier habits and part of that is winding down in the evening in a healthier way than video games.
The Rift - the town that Dalinar burned his wife alive in.The location of his most brutal actions. Thaidakar - The Lord of Scars, leader of the Ghostbloods Restares - He was Adolin's judge in his trial, a herald of the Almighty. Sons of Honor - a secret organization dedicated to the return of the heralds. Shallans brother was a member when he was killed by Paladin. Amaram was a member. Axwindeth - The Terrisman from Scadrial that was a member of Gavilars court and showed Venli about the new rhythms leading to the return of the Voidbringers
Yeah. If you’re not recently locked into the other four books, this book would be confusing as hell. So happy I did a reread.
Here is a Dragonsteel photo dump. I'm going to organize my story cards and will post those later. View attachment 120066
man there is so much going over my head rn, references I feel like should be mind-blowing but I don't remember anything lol
Sorry to interrupt the WAT talk but Rhythm of War is a very weird start... With the year gap (in the story) between books there's a lot just casually thrown out there, and with the sliced POV's, it's like a sandlerlanche start without any sort of build up. A very different, and a little confusing start. Examples - not really questions - just things that seem to have some out of nowhere. Kaladin his ongoing duel with Lewshi and something about one remaining honor spren left that refuses to bond anyone. Very cryptically thrown out there like it's something we should know but I don't recall. I think that Kaladin was also in some sort of relationship from comments thrown out.? Navani her ship is explained in Dawnshard, but it's just casually mentioned that they they've been interviewing spren and that Ash and two other (I think) Heralds are being interviewed. Also, just throwing out the Sister who is one of the spren capable of creating a bondsmith but is just dead or asleep? I don't remember the Heralds reaching Urithiru in Oathbreaker, or any mention of the sister. Also, lots of truthwatchers now but Renarin is still corrupted. It seems like Truthwatchers would be extremely OP and important and not just get a passing mention of 'oh yeah, we have them now' and how has Renarin lived a YEAR with a voidspren. Shallan A lot with the sons of honor infiltration seems to have happened. I can follow mostly. EDIT - For any suneater fans, it reminded me of book 2 of that where I was absolutely convinced some of the things being mentioned were recaps that happened on page and not off page stuff being fed to the reader.
I just read and listened (bit of both) ROW and I feel like I missed a ton as I read recaps. Maybe audiobook was the wrong medium for me on that one. I worry I’ll be lost with WaT when I start
So, is there a companion read-along of this like the Malazan Re-Read of the Fallen? Because man I am struggling with some of this stuff lol. Still enjoying it for what it's worth
partially, yes - there was one done alongside the pre-release chapters, so it goes through day 2 and is on a break until january. Wind and Truth - Reactor alternatively if you're on a kindle then the Cosmere Fictionary is great, Kindle dictionary that pulls from the Coppermind wiki (fully up to but not including WaT) The Fictionary - Cosmere
Felt the same on my first read, I guess to show time had passed but there was a lot of hand waving that felt maybe not unearned per se but definitely felt more overly explanatory than character/plot focused. good or bad?
this is perfect, thanks! I'm now going through my second detailed recap of RoW. This site will help a lot
Finished Elantris today. Crazy how much his plotting and prose jumped up even from that to Mistborn, but I really liked the characters and world. I'm excited to see him revisit it in the future.
I just finished Day 3. It's like each page has a new revelation or development; I can only imagine the last couple. Absolutely loving it.
I have been absolutely neck deep in Cosmere lore this past week. @OwainGlyndwr cleared some things up due to my bad memory. I've gone through two different RoW recaps. Coppermind shortcut is saved on my phone, tab is constantly open on my work computer. Things are clearing up more, but I'm still foggy with others. Just over 200 pages in tho and enjoying it.
Thankfully they have huge disclaimers at the top of most articles, but yeah I've been very cautious lol
