200k plays on Youtube in less than a day is quite impressive.

This is why Brand New would have to do zero promo work before releasing an album.

Their cult fan base does most of the marketing work for free. The core group of die-hards, and I include myself in that category, naturally goes out of their way to tell people when this band does anything after they post any communication on their website or web-store.

Simply throw up an announcement of an album release, along with a special pre-order bundle, and wait 2-4 weeks to actually release. Then watch it hit a top 10 spot in the Billboard 200.

    Fixed.

Can anyone make out the lyrics to the bridge? Here's my attempt:

Blessed be the lost at sea
The rest in peace was what they conceive in
Though I am messed up, know distress
I fall asleep holding your hand
Among alien dunes, you are a pale vision of blue
And I’m a second sail, a second thief
    So, go save someone else

Jammed this in the car on the way to work today while having an anxiety attack.

I love love love this song and love the lyrics. Simplistic chorus' never bothered me much as some of my favorite bands have some songs with simplistic choruses, and as long as the verse/bridge lyrics are good it more than makes up for it IMO.

Also don't get the "doesn't pack emotional punch"...I love the introspective look at himself and his relationship and how he feels inferior or not good enough for his wife. I enjoyed those same songs that seemed to be about his relationship with Jesus/God, and I love that this one is more "straightforward" and he didn't feel like it was necessary to write some intricate, hard to decipher metaphor laden song.

Same. It's tied for my least favorite with Daisy, but there are individual songs on YFW I go back to waaaay more than Daisy. Others I listen to more often for nostalgia.

His voice is a little deeper, less whiny/raw, I don't know. He sounds like himself but with less emotion or something. I feel like he sounds a lot better in "Mene". Also, I've listened to the new song and Mene a bunch yesterday and today and Mene just hits me sooooo much harder.

Ok here is my stupid BOLD prediction of the year! Brand New releases a final swan-song double album, 8 songs or so each. One will be sad deep dark songs and the other will be really upbeat happy (or as happy as Jesse Lacey can be) songs. Kind of like leaving behind the doom and gloom and moving on to a more upbeat unknown that lies ahead!

I've got a feeling once we see this song live we're gonna love it. I like the song, but I can agree there seems to be a little lack of energy, but I think once they start playing this live it's gonna sound huge.

This is how I feel too. Hearing this song played in a decent venue will be outstanding, let alone an amphitheater.

People who are complaining about the lyrics' "lack of depth" act like he's writing "Play Crack The Sky" metaphors in every song. It's often closer to "Jesus", where he mixes direct allusion with narrative storytelling. This is completely within Jesse's traditional writing style.

I really like the lyrics to this song actually. I'm not sure what it is about this song that I don't love... I do like the song just feel like it's missing something :/ I do think it's gonna be a lot better in the context of the album.

Jason didn't care for The Devil and God lyrics, that turned out to be a great album.

Thrice's new song sounds more like Brand New than this Brand New song does.

Haha, you came up with almost the exact same thing I did.

Only difference is I don't really hear "second thief"... there's enough of a pause that it could be a two-syllable word, but if it is, he's saying it VERY softly, which I wouldn't expect from a syllable starting with a hard C. What I hear is "I'm a second sail, a saved thief."

"Conceive in" could also be "conceded." Someone posted that on reddit, and I listened on headphones and didn't really hear it, but when I played the song in a car for the first time it jumped out at me as "conceded." Also, either way, I think it makes more sense if the line is "Their rest in peace," but the two would sound exactly the same so it's hard to say.

Maybe the vinyl release will come with lyrics.

I think I like that one more aesthetically, but it doesn't fit the tone of the song as well.

    It's my mum's dodge caravan

Being able to sleep on it has changed my opinion a little, it's a decent song and probably as good if not better than the first new Thrice one, and if the Radiohead hype has taught me anything, there's a likely chance this won't be representative of the whole album in the same way Burn the Witch =/= AMSP

I agree. I don't have it as the displayed album art in my iTunes library, but it's attached to the file, just because it's interesting and I like having it ;-p

EDIT: Makes a good Avatar though. At least until the next round of Marvel hype.

I don't hear the saved thief, second thief makes sense in the context of the song, the second thief on the cross was St Dismas, who was repentant and canonised by Jesus. The song appears to be Jesse admitting his faults etc so it links in.
