I Am A Nightmare might be tied as least favorite Brand New song for me. That still doesn't make it bad, per se, but this is still so disappointing. I love BN most for their complexity, and while Mene might have been straightforward as well, there was a raw, aggressive approach that made the song personally captivating and balanced the simplicity out a little bit. Not so much in IAAN. It's a confusing feeling, being letdown by a BN song.

Really happy a lot of you are enjoying it though!! Bottom line: ANY new Brand New > no Brand New.

 

It's actually not as bad as some of the other posters are making it out to be... Usually it's just like, is anyone going to see these guys in so and so city his week lyric tax "blah blah blah " lol

 

Brand New LP5...dare it be the disappointing equivalent to Transit's Young New England?

 

A horrible Brand New album is better than the best thing Transit ever did ... so, I'm not that worried about this.

 

What is a lyric tax?

 

I have trouble judging any song as a stand alone single... This is why I hate listening to radio, I almost have to listen to songs as a record.. It's weird I can hate a song by itself but love it on a record

 

Every post in the group has to have some sort of brand new lyric on it lol

I honestly don't know that Jesse would ever write a "happy" song. Yeah the music itself is upbeat, subject matter not so much. It seems to be about Jesse's low opinion of himself or about his own inadequacies. I could be totally misreading that, but its still not happy.

I've never posted on it, but also I've never seen a post without a lyric attached to it... The worst posts on there are people constantly saying they dumped their significant others for not liking brand new, the best posts are occasionally people posting useful news, such as last night

 

So, it's a cult?

 

Yet to see anyone quote In A Jar or the amazing into to Vices/ending of Noro so the group is basically dead to me

 

Something like that lol... It's worth a like on fb the posts really arnt anymore annoying than most of the ads on there now

 

More like if r/relationships and r/brandnew had a horrible, incestuous child that occasionally gives cool info

Someone did the intro to the song "daisy" but yea most of it is devil and God and deja lol.. I think I once posted daisy or devil and God and people freaked out at me thinking I was crazy for even thinking they could be compared.. Never posted on there again

 

Ahaha I observe from a distance for that very reason, like considering how awful Facebook is it's worth it for the occasional tour post/info leak as they're bloody quick but wouldn't really get into a discussion there.

The worst part is people can get really weird on it but it's their personal profile, not like behind relative anonymity here or on Reddit which just makes me uncomfortable

 

I mean I took the chorus in a similar fashion to Julien Baker's Sprained Ankle (the album and the song) in a lot of ways. It's self-deprecating and in some ways could be viewed as negative, but there's a glimmer or view of some faint hope.

"I am a nightmare and you are a miracle" reminds me of "Everybody Does" (I know I'm a pile of filthy wreckage you will wish you never touched.") I think they have a similar basic premise that the narrator (whether that's Jesse/Julien, or someone they're presenting the story through) feels like their self-destructive streak and inability to fix themselves will destruct the one good thing in their lives, but they are trying so desperately to hold on to that one thing- the miracle.

I think there is something uplifting in that seeking, even if there are definitely some depressing lyrics in there.

Then again, I relate everything back to Julien Baker right now so.. bear with me on that one

 

That moment when you realize Julien Baker is a better lyricist than Jesse Lacey.

 

Can I just say too how cool it is to be able to share new music thoughts on both the release day of Mene on Absolutepunk last year, and the release of I Am A Nightmare this year on Chorus.fm with the same people?
