I haven't listened to them either. It's interesting because I didn't tell myself I'd never listen to them again, I decided to just wait and see how I felt. But I don't even have a desire. There would be no joy in it.

Got a sinking feeling when I got a notification for this thread after so long and it did not disappoint. Fuck that take, this band, and anyone who took the forgive / forget approach.

It's ridiculous what has happened. I find myself skipping the songs and on the verge of permanently deleting them. Every time one comes on I get a sick feeling, it's like the whole Lostprophets scenario again.

Went into Vans to buy some shoes cuz my job uniform needs casual black shoes and the store played 2 Brand New songs back to back. A year ago, I'd be all over it, but I just felt over it. Just thought to myself "For fuck's sake" and browsed my phone while I waited for the guy to grab samples in my size.

I still have Science Fiction in the glove department of my car and TDAG/Daisy/Deja vinyls in my room but I haven't had the urge to even look at them in months. Just gonna let them sit there until I'm truly over the fact I spent money on them with my college job. Can't believe I spent money and time on something so tainted.

It honestly surprised me how easy it was for me to ditch them. They meant a lot to me, YFW was one of my favorite albums and definitely the soundtrack to a part of my life. DAG narrated a part of my life where I felt really stuck and got rotation from me nearly every day. Then, all of that stuff came out and I thought I would wrestle with it, I really did. Not whether or not it was true, but whether or not I could continue listening to a band that was definitely a part of me. But I dropped them right away and never looked back.

I honestly think it's crazy how they had the whole till 2018 thing going as if they were going to call it quits and then their career went up in flames.

p sure the resurgence of this thread made me have a dream last night that i learned one of the songs of science fiction on guitar, after having not listened since that day it all came out

I learned how to play "Waste." Now sometimes I play it while I'm just noodling and I get mad at myself.

Don't go out of my way to listen to them, but I listen to my whole library on shuffle sometimes and when they pop up I don't always skip it. Only sometimes.

The most confusing part about all of this for me - a person who simply doesn't have the experiences a lot of others have - is thinking there's more to it than we know.

To me, I have a gut feeling (but no knowledge of anything) that either the victims we're aware of and victims we don't know about are telling their story to someone and it's going to come out as a much bigger thing than it seems to be right now ... or we're going to find out it was all not as the victims said it was.

Either way, I don't think this whole thing is wrapped up and done. I'm not looking forward to the bloodbath. I worry this won't all end up moving the conversation in a positive direction.

‘I’ think you can listen to this band. In saying that, it’s important to be aware of what one of the members did. The songs still exist in my head from repeated listens. I can’t change that. I won’t be financially supporting anything Brand New related. I am disgusted and disappointed to hear what took place in Jesse’s personal life. It must suck for the victims, his family, as well as Vin, Brian and Garrett, and everyone else involved, even if they are on the periphery. I hope that people learn from this kind of thing, whatever they need, to prevent bad stuff from happening presently and in the future.

one of the victims recently tweeted that one of her friends was also abused by jesse and that several publications interviewed her but then didn't run the story.

Why wouldn't they run the story?

They seemed to immediately run everything else associated with this. Do they think the story is without an audience now 6-ish months later?

Did she say when her friend was interviewed? Is it a thing that just hasn't come out or is it a thing that was buried?

Questions aren't (necessarily) for you, more just questions for the larger culture.

I've listened to SF once or twice since. I haven't listened to any of their other albums. Deja is probably a shit show in retrospect.

I'd guess the story wasn't run because they couldnt verify it like they easily could the other stories? Journalists do have to be careful with these stories and how they run them

I thought I remember reading somewhere all the way back in November that Nicole (the first victim to speak out) said she was going to be part of a much larger story involving Jesse in a larger media publication (I want to say New York Times, could be wrong). Obviously, that never came out.

That's the inherent problem with news media. You don't know how much is being reported, and with what bias.

I don't see how bias would come to play here. Multiple women who didn't know each other came forward with stories that Jesse groomed them when they were young. He admitted that he did terrible things to people, but the band has made no efforts to stop their shitty fanbase from being awful to these accusers. I don't know how any of that can come into question now.

As for the music, I also miss listening to it. But there's just too many songs like "Sic Transit Gloria" that reek of the sleaze of Jesse's gross actions. I can't remove myself from that.

I didn't know that. I wonder what happened with it and why it didn't run (yet).

There are really only four possibilities, right?

    1. Allegations are true but it's not the right time. Maybe it's waiting for any extra development from the band.

    2. Allegations are true but there's no audience. They don't see it as something that'll get enough views to spend time/money developing.

    3. Allegations are true and it's still in development. The story is larger than it first seemed.

    4. Allegations aren't true. Any sort of withdrawal of previous articles would be quiet and only after threat of litigation which is a very public thing - and public exposure is a thing BN didn't seem to like.

Sorry for being a speculative little guy. I'm invested in both sides, I guess. I want to see that these allegations aren't true - I'd love to live in a world where there are less sexually violent acts happening and the people that make good art aren't also gross. But I'd hate to see these allegations proven false because then what sort of undermining does that do to the efforts to reduce/eliminate/call out these people and problems?

To clarify, I meant bias on the site(s) reporting & writing...not trying to say the victims fed off bias here

A portion of that song also feels like it’s about a boy who was being forced into unwanted sexual activity.

More than anything, it kinda tells you the whole thing was part of his world at the time. Or maybe it just haven normal to him to treat people or be treated that way.
