Yes. I try not to debate it anymore because it bums me out.

 

I DONT HATE IT... I've just heard those songs live enough that I want to hear rarities from other records

 

I guess to each their own.. Full on admit it's different then their other albums, but honestly no two BN albums sound alike.. I think YFW has some jams..

 

Valid Point.. I wouldn't mind seeing less TDAG in their set, but I understand gotta play the material off the popular album.. I wouldn't mind more deep cuts for sure

 

I like YFW, but it's still their weakest record, and it's just plain bizarre to hear them sing some of those lyrics in 2016. Soco is still cool w me though. A couple of others. None that are better than anything on any other record though sooo.

 

Oddly enough that's how I feel about Deja, full on understand I am a minority opinion on that.. Just never really enjoyed that album

 

I think that about YFW and Deja. Disclaimer: not really a BN fan, just like half of TDAG and moderately enjoy Daisy

 

Deja's song structures get a bit repetitive/they were clearly going for big sing along choruses on most tracks

 

Yea, by no means is Deja an awful album.. Just my least favorite

 

Deja has a self awareness about it that was incredible to me in high school and it opened me up to that kind of thing in a context other than literature. Plus I do think the lyrics are better than YFW, and it's just a good record overall, still. But I think it's a time and place thing for a lot of people; some of those songs are pretty heavily leaning on their influences still in a way that's less homage and more crutch like. I had the benefit of not being aware of those influences until after bc I was in high school haha

 

totally agree. i feel like it's description as a gateway album is the most accurate. it was pivotal to me as a teenager but they've gone on write songs I find much more interesting and that have somewhat transcended their influences.

 

I'd seen so many people describe Deja as a life changing album, and I tried so much, but I just didn't get it. I enjoyed (and still do) songs on the album, but I never made the connection with it that I'd read about. It was frustrating for a while, thinking I wasn't listening the right way, but I think it's just not for me.

 

Yeah I mean, it's a step stone kind of album you know? As much of a stepping stone as it was for the band, it's also one for the listener (depending on where you are in your experience) imo. At the end of the day, I am not sure how impartially I can judge the quality because the band in general opened up a whole body of listening to me, starting a little with YFW and getting broader with each album. So shout out to them for that.

 

I'm not sure if I'd love Deja as much as I do had I heard TDAG and fallen in love with it first.

Same way that I'm not really a huge fan of YFW, but I still enjoy it for what it is, because I started with Deja.

Yeah, and I mean, I was definitely at the point in my life and my music listening where a stepping stone album is what would have really grabbed me, but I just think that wasn't the one. Personally, I'd say I have Jimmy Eat World to thank for helping expand my musical tastes, maybe that one Transit album too tbh.

 

Damn, I should have totally flown up there for that show on a vacation or something.

 

Mhm, I get it. I got to see this in action when I introduced this band to my friend. Lucky for my listening, this band was pretty vocal about who they were into. Like from here it led me directly into Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The Smiths, and Pavement (along with Kevin Devine, who also pointed me towards broader listening at roughly the same time). These are things I probably would've found eventually, but they were THE catalyst in a time period full of catalysts. This was when I started listening to albums as opposed to singles and in chronological order as opposed to what was popular. I have a lot of feelings about Deja, haha. It's not even my favorite.

 

Yep, definitely the same for me with the time I'm thinking of. Maybe I do have Deja to thank to some extent...a lot of what made me want to expand and look for more, different music was reading all of what people had to say about Deja on AP and what it did for them. Though it didn't have the same impact on me, being part of the community then did inspire me greatly.

 

Oh, that's interesting -- I wonder a lot how it would've been if I was a part of a community when all this happened. It was essentially me fumbling in the dark so it was pretty slow going, but I also didn't have any sort of widespread opinion or hype attached when I listened to it. The one bit of hype I had for this band going into them was how often i saw "is that what you call tact, you're as subtle as a brick to the small of my back" or "i've seen more spine in jellyfish, i've seen more guts in eleven year old kids" and not knowing what it was from until listening to seventy x 7 haha and obviously it was only up from that album

 

Searching #BrandNew on Instagram and looking at all the MSG pictures is pretty cool seeing them headline there.

They didn't play Mene or I Am A Nightmare at MSG. They played Quiet Things and Tautou before Sic Transit though.
