Master of not knowing what the hell I'm doing.

I hate to be pedantic but you guys do mean IAAN not IATN right? Don't want to get confused haha

I just really don't need experimental after Daisy. I've had enough of that sound. I like my Brand New in more in the Deja-FOYD-TDAG vein really. Not that I dislike screaming, but I like vocals more balanced like Sic Transit or Sowing Season vein where you get some screaming but it's, for the most part, audible, and the song is mostly sung. I know I'm in the wrong camp there for a lot of people but as much as I enjoy Vices or In A Jar or etc, the screaming in those songs just gets hard to listen to at times.

I thought IAAN came kind of sounded like it could have fit on the FOYD side of things, though the intro riff is a bit more Deja/YFW-ish. But TDAG had the best mix of vocals, straight forward songs, and less traditional songs/song structures IMO. I just doubt we'll get that same atmosphere out of an album because of how damn dark it was and how much of a better place everyone in the band seems to be. I'm really enjoying the lyrics from Jesse on questioning why people even choose to associate with him and whether or not he's "good enough" for both his family and, at least it seems, God and etc. It's easy to relate to but also not as immature as YFW's lyrics.

Just from the top of my head I feel like the amount of screaming on Daisy isn't drastically more than on TDAG is it? I mean Bed, You Stole, At The Bottom, Daisy, Noro, Be Gone, Bought A Bride... None of them have moments I'd really consider all that screamy. Just Vices, Sink and Gasoline really stand out as being scream-heavy.

It was more the way the screams were. They always screamed, but it was almost always audible or just not over the top to me. So many of the screams on Daisy just make me cringe more than they make me go "FUCK YEAH!" and want to scream along haha. I honestly don't know why/what it is.

Be Gone...ugh. Bought a Bride is pretty much screamed, or at least shouted, the whole time minus the first verse (which is my favorite part of that song, for some reason love the whole savior/red house lyric) and the post-chorus, and even that's a little screamy...Bed is boring with some very questionable lyrics, though I do enjoy it more than most I think, from what I've seen around here. Same with You Stole being a little bit boring, but the last 90 seconds or whatever it is of that song are always fun to jam to. I just didn't feel the build as good in that song as I did in Limousine or Archers or even Jesus, which builds in a much different way. Daisy is by far my favorite song on the album, which I think is ironic because I tend to like typical song structures and such with a chorus and a hook and all that. But the whole second half of that song is soooo good. I'm a sucker for the overlaying vocals and I love the lyrics that we can make out. Noro I like a lot, but by the time we get to that song I'm just over the overall sound and feel of the album at that point. Like In A Jar I love the verses and then we get to the chorus and I'm just like "meh....cool", and I think the band called that album "exhaustive" to get through and that really is a great word to describe how I feel by the time I get to Noro.

I'll gladly take another TDAG, but I'm really over the Daisy sound and lyrical style at this point. Give me some sing a long choruses and bridges and hooks that get stuck in my head for weeks. I don't think they have to revert back to YFW level lyrics to do that, and I think IAAN was a good example of that. The chorus itself is simple and repetitive, but it works well with the song and somehow doesn't come off as immature despite the simplistic idea of it.

I know I'm in the minority around here when it comes to that, so sorry if anyone wants to throw tomatoes at me lol.

This band was best from 2003-2008ish (Flying Under Tree Level, Deja, FOYD, TDAG and Fork & Knife). I don't think Daisy can hold a candle really. Even if you like the direction they went in to me the songwriting was either more arbitrary or more intentionally subversive, or at the least unrefined experimentation rather than a mastered sound. It doesn't sound cohesive or like a band totally in their element like the previous stuff did.

If I'm gonna listen to jarring, polarizing music that has power in its dissonance and aggressiveness. Give me Fugazi or literally any authentic hardcore punk band in that vein. Give me Sonic Youth if i want to hear noise and effects and wild guitar work. Give me Jawbreaker for more heart tugging discord. Not really something I want to hear from Brand new, who to me have more so mastered the expression of profound melancholy through dark sounding guitar work, loud bass and toms, and thick production. They're reaching to match the grit and explosion of the heavy punk bands they were inspired by, but it's not actually THEIR strong suit as musicians.

I think if they made an indie rock record or an earthy acoustic record with drums, those would be "different" sounds from them that they've hinted at being capable of pulling off well.

Okay with Brand New being done after this one. I'd love to hear a Jesse solo album.

i would be absolutely shocked if a "Jesse Lacey solo album" ever happened. i feel like the things he writes either go to Brand New or into the abyss. but who knows i guess.

Oh yeah, also for the 225893th time since 2009 i just want to publicly disagree with the users above me and say that Daisy (IMO) is the most interesting Brand New album, and the second best Brand New album (behind TD&G)

Yeah I don't think he will have a solo career. I also think he has said before that any music he ever does would be for Brand New... I might have made that up, or dreamt it...but it sounds right

Except for what he's already released that wasn't for Brand New? Granted, they were covers, but I'd take an entire album of covers with his wife. I thought those releases were fun.

I just can't see him hanging it up if brand new calls it a day.

Yeah I'm not gonna count covers... And I honestly think if we were ever gonna have a solo Jesse Lacey project it would have happened by now. I think he will just produce like he did for Bubblegum. If we ever get a Jesse Lacey solo project I will eat my shoe and I'll gladly accept all the "I told you sos" that I deserve. I just don't think it's ever gonna happen.

I don't know that it would be a big solo production, but I could definitely see him continuing to contribute to splits, release music with his wife, and do small EP's here and there.

Would love an album basically entirely of Vices, in the same way I'd love a Hotelier album that was like Life In Drag the whole way through but not gonna happen :/
