I understand being automatically antagonistic in the politics section when people question that idea because of the typical person that goes in there specifcally to question it...but here, who knows, might be some people who are open to listening.

 

I'm fine with someone being anti-police. The police institution is racist and has soooo many problems. I'm not fine with someone siding with terrorists or promoting violence. Believing violence is bad shouldn't be a controversial opinion

if I could, allow me to try to elaborate on this because I think there's an opportunity for discourse here despite all the overly reductive posts.

"violence is always bad" is dismissed by Jake as "very white" because historically, white people in the US have had the privilege of never needing violence to affirm their position in society. think about what "violence is never okay" is meant to convey. it was used to tell slaves that they shouldn't fight their masters. it was used to dismiss the civil rights movement. hell, it's still used to dismiss black liberation movements. just look at Black Lives Matter, even when they're nonviolent they're dismissed because someone broke a window somewhere.

so, yes, violence against innocent people is wrong, but "violence is never okay" is misguided because it treats violence against oppressors the same as violence against oppressed. for example, the Haitian Revolution was very violent, but does that make it bad? it was an uprising that was successful in liberating slaves. a more popular example is World War 2—were we wrong to fight nazis because "violence is always bad"? and you can say "the rules are different in war" but imo that's a very arbitrary distinction.

Ok that's a fair response. And there are certainly situations where violence is the only way. Like the American revolution, or people overthrowing fascism. Like I totally get that. I'm just thinking in this particular situation saying someone deserved to get stabbed by a terrorist isn't one of those time violence is necessary.
