The trick is to type everything into Google translate in perfect English. A lot of the time people don't realize that their English is oafish. So if you use correct grammar and type it in, then read the translation to check if anything looks weird, you can squeak by without looking like a buffoon. Also, knowing Portuguese does help every now and then with other languages.

Fun fact: had my first guitar lesson today. It's with this bad ass guy named Murphy who runs a guitar store near me. It's like a group beginner guitar lesson thing. I'm the only person under age 45. It's pretty rad
