Possibility Days John Appleseed’s Lament God of Ocean Tides Palisades Park I love Dislocation, but I’m going to have a hard time going against Palisades Park at any point here.
Possibility Days (This one was actually really tough for me - I enjoy Earthquake Driver a lot, but I think that Possibility Days is much stronger lyrically) Scarecrow (This was easy for me) God of Ocean Tides (Not quite as easy as the last one, but still pretty easy) Palisades Park (Dislocation is great, but it never stood a chance here)
Current Totals ———————— Possibility Days - 5 Earthquake Driver - 1 John Appleseed’s Lament - 3 Scarecrow - 3 God of Ocean Tides - 4 Cover Up the Sun - 2 Palisades Park - 6 Dislocation - 0
Possibility Days Scarecrow God of Ocean Tides Palisades Park The hardest was PP vs. Dislocation. Those are probably my two favs off the record. I listen to “Dislocation” more but I can’t vote against PP just for what it is haha
I wish “John Appleseed..” had a different vocal on it. I’ve heard him absolutely kill it live, but IMO he sounds tired and worn out on the album. I actually had to write a paper a few years ago where I chose one band and compared my favorite sounding recording that they’ve released (production/performance/recording wise) with my least favorite. I chose “Up All Night” and “John Appleseed..”
Possibility Days Scarecrow Cover Up the Sun (This was the toughest for me. I really like both of these songs, but I just love the sound that CUTS goes for.) Dislocation (I don't actually believe this, but Dislocation is great and I want to make sure it doesn't get shut out, because it doesn't deserve that. Of the "rock" songs on this album, I think it's easily the best.)
And Round Two comes to a close! Winners in bold... Possibility Days - 7 Earthquake Driver - 1 John Appleseed’s Lament - 3 Scarecrow - 5 God of Ocean Tides - 5 Cover Up the Sun - 3 Palisades Park - 7 Dislocation - 1 Round Three begins next!
Somewhere Under Wonderland ROUND THREE 1.) Possibility Days vs. Scarecrow 2.) God of Ocean Tides vs. Palisades Park
Possibility Days Palisades Park Agreed that it should be these two. This album has quite the bookends of songs here.
Current Totals ———————— Possibility Days - 4 Scarecrow - 1 God of Ocean Tides - 0 Palisades Park - 5 Personally, I find the second matchup brutal - the two best songs on the album for me.
Same. I like Possibility Days just fine, but I get the sense that people love it, and I don’t get it. Ocean Tides is sooo goooood.
And so we finish up Round Three! Possibility Days - 6 Scarecrow - 1 God of Ocean Tides - 0 Palisades Park - 7 The Final Round up next!
Ok, after reviewing the suggested B-Side contenders, here are the ones I’m discarding and why, in an attempt to avoid butthurt. “Sunday Morning L.A.” and “There Goes Everything”: do not appear to exist on YouTube. “Hazy,” “Chelsea,” “Margery Dreams of Horses,” and “August and Everything After”: only appear as live recordings on YouTube. I am hesitant to include “Barely Out of Tuesday” as the studio recording does not appear to be attached to an official release of any kind. Everything else is good to go, tho! If you can locate a studio version of the other songs that people can easily access, post it and I’ll reconsider.
Palisades Park is my pick. It’s remarkable that they pulled a song like that off, and it being the first song on the record just adds to its value. Possibility Days was my favourite for a long time. I knew it was one of their best songs when a live recording came out a few months before the album. I replayed that video over and over — so much so that I like thatparticular live video more than the album version. Someone said Adam sounds tired on the recording of John Appleseed, and that’s kind of how I feel about Possibility Days too. Maybe not necessarily tired, but the vocal take is just not my favourite of how I’ve heard him do it. It’s a perfect end to the album though, the lyrics are brilliant.
