And to my very pleasant surprise, my favorite song wins for Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings! Cowboys - 6 Hanging Tree - 1 Somewhere Under Wonderland begins next!
I was curious how the generator was gonna handle the rounds for a nine song album, and now we know! Somewhere Under Wonderland ROUND ONE Elvis Went to Hollywood vs. Earthquake Driver Remember that this round will remain open for 48 hours! Enjoy your weekend!
Earthquake Driver Neither are my favourites, but both have grown on me tremendously, Earthquake Driver moreso (it was my least fav when the album first came out). Elvis reminds me of Angels in its instrumentation, and there’s some great imagery in the lyrics, even though I don’t know what the hell he’s talking about. I love the hip-hop influence in Earthquake Driver, and I might like the acoustic version more. The chorus (bridge? The “I’m plugged into the lightning line” part) is beautiful
Earthquake Driver Elvis Went to Hollywood is my least favorite track on the record. I’ve just always had a hard time getting into it no matter how many times I’ve heard Adam explain it and play it up.
Earthquake Driver. I guess. I'm not super attached to either of these songs. This album is weird for me, because I really, really loved it when it came out, and gave it an absolute rave review, and put it in my top five for 2014, and I almost never listen to it now. A lot of the songs feel kind of half-formed. There are great moments, especially "Possibility Days," but a lot of it feels jam-band-ish to me, and not in a good way. Easily my least favorite Counting Crows album.
Now would be as good a time as any to start shoring up what contestants will be in the B-Sides Round. Here’s my current list... Shallow Days Love and Addiction Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman) She Don’t Want Nobody Near Accidentally in Love I’m sure there are plenty more, so please post or message me with which ones you feel passionately should also be included. My Only Caveat: It needs to be something that was officially released in some capacity - No. Unreleased. Demos.
Off the top of my head, we definitely need “Baby I’m a Big Star Now,” “Going Down to New York Town,” and the b-sides from SN&SM. There’s one called “Sessions” and another called “Sunday Morning L.A.” I’ll check my iTunes for others.
There's another one from Saturday Nights called "There Goes Everything" that I have not heard in years.
And with that, we have our first winner for Somewhere Under Wonderland! Elvis Went to Hollywood - 2 Earthquake Driver - 5 Thanks for the B-Side suggestions, everyone! Round Two begins in a sec!
Somewhere Under Wonderland ROUND TWO 1.) Possibility Days vs. Earthquake Driver 2.) John Appleseed’s Lament vs. Scarecrow 3.) God of Ocean Tides vs. Cover Up the Sun 4.) Palisades Park vs. Dislocation
Possibility Days John Appleseed’s Lament (the lyrics on Scarecrow are wild and the chorus used to get on my nerves, but it’s my best friend’s fav song so I’ve grown to love it. Lament is such a great song in the context of the band’s entire career though) Cover Up the Sun (could really go either way) Palisades Park (gave me a bit of pause because I love Dislocation, but then I reminded myself of what Palisades Park is and there’s maybe no beating it)
