This article has been imported from chorus.fm for discussion. All of the forum rules still apply.

    Digital Music News:

“That’s why we’re calling on the UK government to protect copyright and introduce new transparency obligations for AI companies so that music rights can be licensed and enforced, as well as calling for the clear labelling of content solely generated by AI,” Jones indicated.

The latter adverb raises interesting questions about what an across-the-board labeling system would look like in practice. For obvious reasons, if they do incorporate AI, established artists probably won’t want their music labeled as such – hence the “solely” clarifier.

This seems like a no-brainer to me.

Yeah I was going to say, "solely" is somewhat open to interpretation. If you use tools to create a song which is 99% AI but you throw in a lyric of your own for it to use, is this clearing the bar?

Anyway, devil's advocate aside, this needs to happen, especially clear labeling. What's the point in trying to trick people into thinking that you created music that you didn't, beside the obvious self-serving reason? Just own it.

While trying to find something about Deezer's AI labeling policy I recently stumbled on a Reddit thread where people who make their music entirely using AI song generator services were bemoaning some new policies which might lead to a de-monetization of the music they were "making".

It's crazy but I got the sense from this admittedly small community that the prevailing sentiment is they're resentful that it's not easy and it's too hard to make your own music. Many were framing themselves as superior to those who put in the effort to write and record their own music.

To be fair, there were some who admitted they didn't consider themselves actual artists and wouldn't put the music they have generated on to streaming services like Spotify and the likes and just use the tools for their own personal enjoyment, but there's a lot of delusion out there.

Yes definitely label it please! Curious how many artists I've listened to on Spotify are actually AI...
