So glad the New Girl reference wasn’t lost on someone. I felt old writing my diatribe so I had to lean into the Schmidt of it all.
I can't even be bothered by that sort of hater bc saying the boys are untalented is just factually incorrect
I’m just shocked at how many people in the replies are saying they like them individually but not together.
I think there's a fair question of how much Boygenius material is their A-level stuff vs castoffs deemed not worthy of their main projects, but if anyone is arguing they don't sound good together they're on a different planet. (Fwiw, I think the roughly even split of BG songs as good as their individual best songs and BG songs that are as okay as their most okay solo material indicates they're probably not thinking about it that way, but I think it's a fair topic to consider.)
I mean just this album has Cool About It, Not Strong Enough, $20, and Satanist which rival the best any of them have done, and which all benefit from the 3 of them being together. Cool About It maybe the one that could've been most pulled off solo, but I think the alternating verses add to it. And that's not even touching the first EP which has both some of the best solo leaning songs they've individually done, as well as the stunning Salt In the Wound. Both times I've seen them (2018 & last week) I've had some of strongest emotional reactions I've ever had to a live performance, and I don't even consider myself quite AS big a fan of them as a lot of people here. They're absurdly talented both individually and as a collective and I can't wait for (hopefully) many more years of both.
I wasn’t going to go to any of the UK dates as they were around £50 which is a lot for me these days. However, my wife convinced me to get a ticket for the Halifax date (seriously, who has ever played in Halifax?!?) and now I’m really excited. It will be my first post-pandemic show. And probably my first outdoor show outside festivals. Excited for Ethel Cain too.
revisiting some of the stuff from earlier in the year, i still don't love this full record but jesus christ the good songs on this are some of the best of the year
right there with y'all. the songs i like, i love, but the whole thing still just hasn't clicked for me unfortunately.
My (hot?) take is this would have been best as another EP. $20 True Blue Emily I'm Sorry Not Strong Enough Satanist Cool About It
i agree with that take $20 Emily Im Sorry Not Strong Enough Revolution 0 Satanist Letter to An Old Poet
Leonard Cohen is my only skip and even when I don’t it’s pretty short and doesn’t bother me that much. I just could have done without it
True Blue is a preposterous omission I’m on team half amazing half fine but tbh the fine half clicked fairly hard for me live
We’re In Love is my least favorite probably but only because I think it’s a little long. It should end at the karaoke part
I don't think any of the songs on the album are bad. Generally, I think the slower songs in the back half are the weaker songs - the catch for me is that the rest of the songs on here are absolutely f---ing incredible. Like they deliver upon the promise of the great songs from the EP.
We’re in love does nothing for me on the album and grinds it to a halt, but seeing it live wrecked me.
I think the album should have been Not Strong Enough 12 times, but the way they did it was pretty good too
Am reading where are your boys tonight and they're talking about the newcomer youths at like 2005/2006 warped not staying hydrated and not having concert experience and passing out and it made me think of this thread and laugh. Idk there will also be an older Gen saying the younger doesn't know the etiquette or social rules but we are just getting old I think
How’s that book been? Not a big fan of oral histories typically. Is it interesting though? The ghosts? I mean the book?
