When I heard the bridge I thought they were trying for their “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” moment lol
Yeah same here, and then I’m like… I can hear Brandon Flowers on all of this. Would be fun to hear him cover it
Had the exact same thought with the entire bridge and ending, especially the "skip the exit to our old street and go home alone"
I had this same thought too omg they covered the killers before as a group so I wouldn't be surprised if it was an influence, intentional or not
I liked this from the start, but this has definitely grown on me throughout the week. I can understand the criticism that a lot of the songs sound like they could have appeared on any of their solo work, but that doesn't really bother me because they're still good songs regardless. That being said, my favorites are the ones that feel like they are more unique to them as a group. Songs like Cool About It, Not Strong Enough, and Satanist (though Satanist does seem like a very Julien-influenced song overall) are absolute standouts. The only two I'm not really in love with are the last two. I think they're both good, but they remind me of two better Boygenius songs (Salt In The Wound and Me And My Dog). Anti-Curse references Salt In The Wound's melodies and lyrics and Letter To An Old Poet does the same with Me And My Dog. It's not inherently negative to reference their other songs, but in this case, it just makes me want to listen to those songs instead.
Isn't Julien like really friggin good on guitar? I don't think her own songwriting has really shown it off in the way someone like St Vincent does
iirc Julien played almost every instrument on her last album and that thing is pretty packed. she is super talented
My greatest wish in life is for Julien to release a record where she absolutely unleashes on guitar. Like the way she plays on Red Door but on every song.
I'll never forget Julien shredding on guitar on the first bg tour while Phoebe and Lucy were bowing to her on stage lol
