I love the more “rockin” songs on this album, but “Cool About It” really has me hooked.

Listened a couple times and I’m finding it to be okay. Not Strong Enough is easily the standout for me. Such a great song.

 

I got the cd at amoeba because I can't wait another three days for the vinyl to get herei. First listen impressions: I think it's great but I kinda wish Julien's singing was more prominent. Highlights for me so far are $20, Not Strong Enough, and Satanist, although there isn't a single song on this I didn't like

 

Not Strong Enough really is one of the best songs I've ever heard - that last chorus is fucking magic

 

Yea and the way Julien delivers the line “singing Boys Don’t Cry” in that track is such a treat

 

Revolution 0 is the best

 

Do we know if Marshall did the drums on satanist ? It rocks

 

Been having some complicated feelings about this. It's clearly a bunch of pretty good-to-great songs but overall it feels uneven in its pacing with too many ballads and I wish the few interludes were longer. They feel like more of a band during the upbeat tracks. Overall a good record but not quite the full step forward into their own sound I was hoping for, like Better Oblivion was relative to Conor and Phoebe's respective sounds.

I think all the songs are a mix of "good" to "great" but the rockier songs and songs they trade vocals are the best. I think if the album was more cohesive it would be received better, a lack of cohesion can definitely weaken an album.

I also feel the Phoebe-only songs could have just...been Punisher b-sides and no one would have been like "THESE ARE BOYGENIUS SONGS!!!". I would have loved those to be replaced with more rockier songs/trading vocals songs. (Same with the Lucy song "We're In Love")

 

Tbh it didn't make a big impression on me, love the songs, love the collab and the amount of fun it seems went to making that whole thing, but I guess I was too hyped for it to be the next "Turnstile Love Connection" (first thing that comes to my mind, that I actually go back to/show to my friends etc., despite not being THAT much into Turnstile in the end). How about you?

 

That’s an unfair comparison because that Turnstile Love Connection video is just such a special thing. Independent of the music & genre behind it. If that is where you set the bar, you’re always going to be disappointed haha
