Yeah, I don't even need more music (but oh boy, will I take it). Just play that EP in front of me as often as possible and I'm a happy camper.
Would have been if two drunk girls didn’t talk/sing through the entirety of Juliens set and I didn’t get crazy sick the next day! But yeah, the Boygenius set was truly special.
I go to a ridiculous amount of shows so I see this happen quite a bit. People don't realize or care how incredibly rude they are sometimes. Talking while upfront during shows, constantly yelling at the band, or singing loudly and poorly in your ear to the point you can't even hear the singer anymore, or just sitting on their phones the whole time. I don't recall any during boygenius luckily, but during Better Oblivion, this guy was yelling "I LOVE YOU PHOEBE" after almost every song until people kept telling him to shut up. Sometimes I drive 5+ hours to a show, so it sucks having one or a few people not be respectful. I've had multiple shows where I barely remember parts of it because someone else ruined the experience for me. Especially harder on those quieter packed shows when you don't want to be the guy pushing through the crowd to get away from them as everyone else is being peaceful and in their own personal space. At least in louder shows you can sneak through the crowd. Anyway, people suck sometimes.
It’s rough. I saw Julien at a free show in Chicago on my birthday this year (and maybe I’ve should have known better with it being a free show and an open bar) and the chatter was horrendous. It was literally overpowering her onstage, and I was on the barricade. Really bummed me out.
I remember that show. Chicago was the five hour drive I was referring to. I actually drove in for Bad Books that night, but man I would have liked to see that too. Reminds me of the time I saw Julien Baker and my friend was down the street at the Every Time I Die show and Julien Baker was standing right next to him watching the show before heading over to headline. Unfortunately I don't think JB wasn't at the Bad Books show but I imagine she would have loved to be.
Lucy Dacus on confronting stage fright, the wisdom of Lana Del Rey and working on her most honest music yet tl;dr - Still no plans to tour but boygenius is not dead.
