Alright I knew this show was going to be special but nothing could have prepared me for that. I’m trying my hardest to not be hyperbolic but.... holy shit. Really one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Gooooood damn.
Two drunk women literally ruined Julien’s set for me in Detroit. They would not stop loudly singing (out of time and off pitch) despite the fact that no one else was, talking through songs, screaming at Julien in between songs, bumping into people around them. So that sucks. But everything else was amazing, and I’m very glad I got to see the Boygenius set unimpeded. If only I didn’t get sick the next day so I could’ve gone to Chicago
I'm sorry that happened. I had a similar experience at Mom Jeans last week with some guy just screaming the lyrics as loud as humanly possible, like it sounded like he was singing Every Time I Die or something and he would like scream talk at his friend the stupidest things and was shouting stuff out between every song. Why do people think that's how they should behave?
I have no idea. Like, I don’t know where these people think they are. And during a Julien Baker set? Where everything is quiet and there is no way to block it out? All in all, though, it was a good night. It was my 7th time seeing Julien, and the other 6 have all been amazing, so I’m not too upset.
There were two obnoxious drunk guys when I saw Julien headlining in Manchester. Luckily we managed to move away from them before Julien after they had heckled, talked, knocked into people throughout Becca Mancari's set.
Yea it’s especially criminal at quiet sets like this. Glad you still had fun though! I’m so excited for tonight it’s going to be unreal.
During my show right before one song Julien said something along the lines of "I encourage you to sing along to this." As soon as I sang out the first 2 lines I realized I was the only douche singing.....kept my mouth shut for the next 40 minutes.
Is she like rly quiet live why does nobody sing along?? I know people pay to hear her sing but sometimes it's v cathartic to shout the lyrics along. If nobody else is like sure don't kill the vibe, but espesh if she encourages people to sing it seems weird that ppl wouldn't
That’s the thing. I actually prefer the shows where people sing along. It’s a really amazing experience. However, it’s when 1-2 people decide to be the ONLY ones singing, especially loudly singing, that ruins it for me.
Last night was great sing-along-wise. People were pretty quiet at first, aside from a few people in front, but once Julien said “thank you for singing along, it’s my favorite thing”, people opened up and it was amazing to hear. It was still subdued so you could hear Julien over everything but I could distinctly hear a crowd behind me singing to TOTL and Rejoice.
I think it’s more a thing about how loud you are singing, especially relative to the crowd. Sounds like these people were screaming more than singing.
Yeah, so like, since everything I've been listening to lately is more along the lines of Boygenius, I felt very out of place at the Underoath concert last week. But anyway... Being in the crowd as they chanted "drowning in my sleep I'm drowning in my sleep" was sooo surreal. But then for other songs there was this girl right behind me who kept touching me and screaming right in my ears--she was the only one singing, and she was loud, and she was close, and it totally killed the vibe. (Plus people kept putting their hands on my shoulders to get my attention so that they could push through to the front, like wtf bro you're taking me out of the moment. I actually started having a better experience when I left the front area. It was cool to see Spencer and Aaron up close, but the light show was cooler from afar, and people were more spread out.) tl;dr singing can enhance or kill a concert experience, it kind of depends on context.
Oh thats the thing. During Lucy/Phoebe/Julien people were so quiet you could hear a pin drop, but when Boygenius came on the whole crowd was singing their hearts out.
