I feel like this movie establishes almost immediately that it's not going to be adhering to any kind of realism. Its baseline is a trope-filled high school movie that's going to be constantly intruded on by insane absurdity. It stays that way throughout. I feel like complaining about tonal shifts in a comedy like this is nine kinds of lame.

I don't even understand the implications of where the tone shifts? The fight between Ayo and Rachel, where Ayo goes on to literally kick a can down the road while Complicated plays?

well, they toe the line between the world of the movie being super surreal in some scenes and then pretty grounded in others. but that’s a feature, not a bug lol

I was not expecting a “realistic” movie, lol. I’m saying their attempt to switch between surreal and grounded made both sides fall flat. If they were any good at one side or the other (outside of Ayo and 1-2 other scenes), it might work.

Again, the movies this was compared to (WHAS, NATM, Zuckers) go absolutely full tilt into the absurdity. Even if there is a sweetness or sincerity at all in them, the comedic language the film presents at the beginning is consistent throughout. That’s what makes them good. There were far too many stretches of this that just bored me. Maybe if I went in cold without seeing those comparisons it would’ve worked more

Honestly, you'd usually make fun of someone talking like this and I'd enjoy it. I wish I could see you play chess against yourself here.

I think you’re mistaken, usually I’d take a beeline to your crowning of it as an instant classic like Superbad and tackle that first. I tried to make my criticisms here at least somewhat grounded in the reality of why I didn’t like it, not just me saying “it wasn’t funny”

Sometimes these forums kill me. Dismissing criticism as "lame" is weird. It's okay if someone doesn't like the thing you like. I don’t think anyone went into this hoping to hate it or find some flaws.

When you go in expecting a movie to be exactly like another one, you’re bound to be disappointed. I think most people really like this because it was surprising and original.

Hm yes, I do have a massive head injury and believed this movie would be exactly like another one. Is that bad?

I said it before but to me this is way closer to Heathers than outright parodies like WHAS or NATM

Just watched this VOD, some funny one-liners but I was expecting this to be a bit funnier.

Wanted to enjoy this an a comedy in 2023. Sadly, I was so uninterested after 15 minutes that I shut it off

Definitely agree with the Heathers comparison. I think I need to give it a second go in a better mood but I did really like it! Kind of felt like a scene or two was missing but overall I laughed my ass off and had a good time. I think I wasn’t expecting it to be quite as absurd as it ended up being and having a clearer idea of what I’m getting will help. Lost it at “My dad LEFT ME and I’m EXTREMELY PUNCHABLE”

I also really enjoyed all the fight choreography. Especially for the montage of the club, it looked like they were given one hour long Jiu Jitsu lesson and then pressed record immediately. The ideas of actual technique was there but poorly executed in the best way.

Also jumping on the Shiva Baby train. Great movie. Agron being in on the joke as a Jewish woman in that role was perfect. Total horror movie

Would love to see that. I feel like a lot of actors have been begging for rom coms in the last few years. Time to bring ‘em back
