I feel like the tonal shifts helped to elevate both sides by contrast.

I agree that the inconsistent reality of the film can be a bit jarring

Agree with this unfortunately, even if I did enjoy it

This is sad to hear. Shiva Baby was an underrated gem.

I still liked Shiva Baby a bit more than this but they're completely different films.

There’s nothing absurdist about Shiva Baby it’s very grounded

It’s a borderline horror movie haha. And I love it for that.

The blatant directorial weaknesses in this might be less apparent in Shiva Baby, at least from what I’ve seen in the trailers/other clips. I won’t write it off because of this one

Shiva Baby has a much stronger script thematically

I like Shiva Baby a hair more than this, but this is still very good despite the tonal issues. I think my favorite scene (the classroom scene just after they "injure" Jeff) is actually very reminiscent of Shiva Baby's chaotic anxious style. There's a million people talking over each other and we feel really disoriented. It gives us anxiety but at the same time the chaos of it all is kind of hilarious.

  16. I totally understand why anyone would feel the way they do about the tonal dynamics in this movie, but idk, it works for me. It doesn’t feel different than any other movie/show that depicts somewhat normal people going through real things while navigating an absurd world

Off the top of my head, the best comedy of the last five years is Red Rocket.

I had no idea this has been out on VOD for a few weeks now. I'm kind of surprised, it seemed like this was doing pretty well at the box office. It seems like they could have had decent legs if they had held off just a little longer.

It was a weird move. I was trying to find time to make it to the city to see it but then when the VOD news came out I decided to wait.

I want to see it again now that I have knowledge of the absurdity going on. The trailers made it seem like it was going to be more in the vein of Superbad, but it was more Not Another Teen Movie and Heathers and I do wonder if that's why it felt a little jarring at times. Looking back at the trailers, hints at the absurdity are there I still feel they were holding things back a bit.

I thought this was fun and the soundtrack obviously rules but I didn't laugh nearly as much as I expected to tbh, hate to say it.
