What did you think of The Maid and Final Girls Support Group? The Maid is still on my list but my wife read it and liked it
I've also been super shitty about updating it. I mean technically I update it whenever I finish a book, it's sort of part of my ritual along with Goodreads. I just like my posts to have at least a little detail on how the books were. Been a good year, The Riftwar Cycle is a lot of fun, and the end is nowhere in sight so it's fun to have a series with that many books to look forward to. My non fantasy standouts were Geek Love, seriously if you haven't read this book and think you have the stomach for it, get the fuck on it, and Father of Lies, written by an ex-mormon who has some pretty dark takes on the religion, if you liked Under the Banner of Heaven, think along those lines. It looks weird that there's only one comic there, but that's because I basically only buy new issues now, and that particular story is being released as a graphic novel so I had no choice. Also that comic fucking rules so it's okay that it's the only one. If you want any more detail on any of these feel free to ask.
Oh wow, someone else has read The Loop, haha. I found that in an audible sale. What are your feelings on the Jemisin trilogy, @Vivatoto ?
Yeah I googled best horror novels (cause I have ran out of ideas) and that was the first one on a list of 50 so I sad screw it. I didn't really care for it. I feel like an idiot when I'm reading Jemisin's book, they're pretty complex and don't hold your hand, but as I'm coming to better terms with that her style I'm digging it more and more. Looking forward to the last book. I also have another series from her on my wishlist. She's obviously like, crazy intelligent, so I'm here for her.
The Maid was a fun read and I liked the main character! Final Girl Support Group wasn’t bad either but I did find myself getting a bit confused keeping track of the characters and all their motives. I never have found myself loving anything by Grady Hendrix, but I didn’t totally HATE this. I also wouldn’t say I loved it lol
That's basically what she said about The Maid as well! I haven't read anything else by him but I wanted/expected to like it much more than I actually did. I definitely didn't hate it, but I didn't like how action packed/high intensity it was. I guess I need to stop reading books with Final Girl(s) in the titles lol
Im not the biggest fan of the trilogy, but the city we became was insanely great. The second in that duology comes out this next month, I think.
HAHA right?? I saw Stephen Graham Jones has a Final Girls book from like 2012 so you might as well just stay away if you haven’t read that yet lol Speaking of that, did you end up reading the newest Riley Sager book? I’ve read some reviews and heard it’s not great. I’ll still def read it before summers end.
Yeah not my favorite either but I see crazy potential with the author so I'll probably like City we Became.
Just looked that one up, looks like @Vivatoto read it last year, I trust his opinions. I'm actually 2 books behind on Riley Sager, been meaning to get around to the car one recently but haven't really been in the mood for non YA/Teen fiction lately
Updated. I've got a few pretty big hyped standalones up next. The Last Human was way more cerebral than I expected, but maybe needed a little bit more action. The John Dies trilogy could've (and should've) been a lot better. I may be done with the Evan Winter series... it's just not that great.
is this a thread to discuss books as well as keep track of stuff? im getting back into reading for the first time in like, 15 years and want some good stuff to read. specifically, im very interested in novels based on video game universes and tie-ins (or vice versa, book that later became video games such as the witcher). if anyone has good recs let me know, im currently reading a world of warcraft novel (shadows rising) and have the first three witcher novels and would like to get around to some of the mass effect and dragon age stuff. also any other general fantasy or sci fi stuff that should be on my radar, ive read the first few chapters of the way of kings by brandon sanderson and plan on getting back into that one very soon. and really anything video game related too, i just finished blood, sweat, and pixels which is what has me reading regularly again, so any other behind the scenes books about game development or the industry would interest me as well (i have press reset, schreier's second book on my want list)
Yes to your first question. I've been way slower with discussing books this year, but its always welcome. I also love video game tie in novels, The Mass Effect ones I read were good, I'm currently reading reading the Starcraft books, which are hit or miss but there's been some good stuff. The Witcher is kind of the pinnacle when it comes to video games and books, the games, especially the third, hit so much harder when you've read the series, since all the games take place after the books. I loved the Star Wars Revan book, mainly because Revan and KOTOR is my favorite Star Wars related thing. If you want some great fantasy recs, check out the sci fi and fantasy thread, that thread has kept me full for years.
I've read a couple of Batman Arkham books and those were pretty good. Riddler's Gambit specifically was awesome. I've also heard good things about the Bioshock book that came out a few years ago. If you haven't read Ready Player One definitely check that out too
About the same quality as usual. Felt a little more insightful than fluff than the others at times. But I still find his worldview to be… impossible without a load of money already.
Oh for sure but his stories are absolutely incredible. Seems like such a great father. It's definitely more of a "living vicariously through him" type of situation
Also like to add that I've read several other forms of media adaptations but those are most likely a harder sell hahaha. Very much in the YA/Teen realm
I’m not totally opposed to YA stuff if it’s a worth while adaptation. I mean the world of Warcraft stuff borders on that sometimes and I enjoy it
