Dude, how do you have time to read 13 books in the first five weeks of the year, given how busy your work schedule is? That is beyond mind-boggling. I'm a big reader myself, but I haven't even gotten to six books this year. Then again most of my free time is spent finalizing my wedding.

I will update my list of books read this year when I get home and have my tablet in front of me. I never thought I'd become a digital reader, but holy heck, I'm now hooked.

The majority of these were short (a couple were under 100 pages, almost all were under 200). Then audiobooks is my other track because I can listen to those during mindless tasks at work, so three or four of these were audiobooks. I'm finishing the 12th today and then I'm starting the 13th one this weekend, so those are just on there for placeholder. I just try to read for half an hour or an hour each day or so, whether that's on lunch break or relaxing at night.

    3. The Bands of Mourning: A Mistborn Novel - Brandon Sanderson
    4. Calamit - Brandon Sanderson

I really need to start using good reads to track what I've read and what I want to read. I'm also trying to expand outside of fantasy this year so we'll see how that goes. Apparently I bought Meditations by Marcus Aurelius so we'll see how that goes haha.

i may get better but we won't ever get well Prestigious

I've been chugging through On Language by Chomsky, The Flowers of Evil by Shuzo Oshimi, and of course, my constant, Lovecraft most recently, have barely had a single ounce of energy to do reading with school though. hoping that changes when i start coop in a month!

i also recently backed The Feminomicon on Kickstarter. an illustrated bestiary of female monsters, creatures, and beings from a range of international folklore. the creator has stated he plans on emphasizing female empowerment and diversity. looks so badass!

Yeah, I was actually gonna go send a few messages to a few people (yourself included) this afternoon over there. Not sure if you saw my list, but I finished Words of Radiance. Jaw-dropping, that book. How is WoT treating you? You're entering the potentially rough phase (but also, some of my favorite moments are in the middle stretch, so I never felt that way about them).

Also, you've already beat my goal for 2016 and it's not even been 90 days yet. Incredible.

Yeah I just noticed your post in the book thread. I knew you'd love it, takes everything that is great about the first book and doubles it. I think learning about Eshonia is my favorite part, I love all the lore for the Pareshendi...Going forward in the series I feel like that stuff if going to get insane. Those last few battles at the end too...Jesus Christ...Oh and I loved finally having S and K together in the the caverns. And of course Adolin at the end...I'm so excited for book 3. Also that epilogue directly relates to something from Warbreaker that makes me really excited.

I meant to tell you Fires of Heaven was seriously my favorite WoT yet. Everything about it was so satisfying. I feel like it built on everything that was great about the previous book with the Aiel and then brought it all to an incredibly tense head, with obviously still plenty more to go. I missed Perrin but honestly the book was so fast paced I didn't really have time to think about it. We'll see how this rough patch treats me, I have such a strong connection to the characters and world at this point it's tough to imagine me not enjoying it. He'd have to add a whole bunch of boring characters and kill everyone else off at this point, haha.

Yeah I'm pretty happy with my reading this year. My only goal is to complete the Wheel of Time and I'm way ahead of that and already itching to start the next book so I'm feeling good. Adding more comics to my reading has been a fun addition.

Adolin actually became my favorite character over the course of the book. I like that he's just an "average" guy in the world, surrounded by "important" people, and trying to make a difference. That battle with Szeth in the crowds was incredible. I was at the gym, sitting on a machine just staring as I listened. S&K in the chasms was amazing. Shallan gets on my nerves incredibly, but her chapters are consistently filled with the best world-building/inspirations. I'd also just read an entire book of interludes for that reason.

I'm actually listening to the Warbreaker audiobook right now. (I got a free three month trial of Audible, and all three have been Sanderson novels.) Excited to learn more of the connections I've been reading about.

Yes! The stuff with Moiraine vs Lanfear completely shocked me the first time I read it. So great/devastating. He does add a lot of characters, to differing levels of boredom, but I actually love how the plot fractures the main groups of characters and splits them around for awhile. I can definitely see how at the time it could've felt like meandering (especially reading them as they were published), but in the scope of the whole series, there are very few things that happened that could've been avoided/skipped. I'm also just a sucker for every character in that book. I only have one let down for the series, but it's in book fourteen so you have a ways before I can mention it.

My goal for this year was "finish all the unread books on my shelves." I'm doing a pretty decent job, honestly. I'm reading books 12 & 13 (of my goal of 50) and I'm right on track. I think if I get that goal finished, I'm going to re-read The Dark Tower series, and then maybe tackle Wheel of Time again. I'm itching to re-read book fourteen, but you can't just not read 1-13 first!

Didn't make a list on AP but I'll try here:

    1. Leviathan Wakes - James S.A. Corey
    2. Caliban's War - James S.A. Corey
    3. The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
    4. Red Seas Under Red Skies - Scott Lynch
    6. Abbadon's Gate - James S.A. Corey
    7. Mistborn: The Final Empire - Brandon Sanderson

Didn't include novellas or comics, but that's what I can recall reading so far this year, which is just a bunch of sci-fi/fantasy stuff, hah. I'll add some more variety this year but I'm currently hooked on Mistborn, going through Well of Ascension now.

Yeah that book really turned around Adolin for me. Not that I didn't like him before but I had some of the same fears as Kalladin. I'm having trouble remembering specifics, like if that was the book when he helped the "dark eyes" but I do recall his protection of his family being a big part of it. And man did I hate that guy, you know the one Sadeas. I remember I was reading the last like 200 pages at work and my shift ended and I just couldn't leave. That whole battle just left me glued to my seat. Warbreaker is my favorite of his standalone novels. Probably my favorite magic system of his. Make sure to post your thoughts. And keep an eye out for Hoyt...

I sill can't believe the Moraine Lanfear thing happened. Part of me is still hoping it wasn't as it seemed. Honestly I'd still like to have both of the characters in the mix. Moraine has always been a favorite character. If anyone was ready for death it was her though, Rand needs to learn to rule without her. I still feel like she has so many plans left unfinished. I'm guessing that Moraine sent Lan after Nanaeve as her warder. At least that's what I'm hoping. That would be sweet of her...I think. Shit, how about all of Rand's friends dying to until he used he Balefire? that was crazy. If you recall this is also the book where they finally explain Balefire which made me very happy. The consequences are insane. Also glad Logain got to do somehing because that's the best fantasy name ever, haha.

I didn't have issues with Martin's book 4 and 5 which added a lot of characters so I should be good. Just as long as the world building is still there. Haha, I'm going to remember that now and when I get to book 14 I'm going to be looking out for it.

I'd really like to read the Dark Tower again, same with basically any Stephen King book since it's been years since I've been through them all, but I just can't stand reading books over when I know there's a milllion things I should be reading. I've got the second Mistborn trilogy, and unpublished Sanderson, the WOT (obviously), and the second Patrick Rothfuss book I still need to read. As far as long books I'm totally set, I just need to throw in some quick horror every now and then to keep things interestings.

Haha, yeah if you were to just say screw it and read book 14 I guarantee you'd be wanting to go back and read the others so you'd find yourself reading them in some insane order. Probably just best to start with book one. It will be interesting to see if you feel any differently about the later books now that you're digging Sanderson.

Yeah, that guy is the worst. That was beautiful, honestly. I was like "YES!" when that particular event went down. This is my first standalone novel of his. His ability to create magic systems is absolutely ridiculous. All three that I've interacted with are so meticulous and thought out. It's brilliant, really.

Sitting here trying not to spoil anything like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Balefire is such an insane concept. I love that it gets explained and then becomes used in different ways. Logain consistently remained a favorite character of mine, even though it's hard to explain why.

I read TDT when I was 15-16, so I feel like I would get so much more out of it at 26 than I ever did as a teenager. The movie also is prompting my desire, for sure. I've still got the first mistborn trilogy to finish (read book one a few years back), and the two Rothfuss novels. Those are up next, actually, after I finish Warbreaker. A buddy of mine says they're the best fantasy books he's read, so I'm excited.

That was probably the biggest surprise of the book for me because it's just so anti-Sanderson. Sanderson loves having villains that aren't all evil, or at least believe what they are doing to be for the greater good. Elantris and Warbreaker are crazy with that. A good parallel to Jordan would be the Whitecloaks. I'm going to admit that becomes tiring, because, don't get me wrong, it's brilliant, but coming from a fan of darker horror oriented work I do enjoy some good ol fashioned evil. Sadeas might teeter a bit more towards evil but he felt he was doing the right thing. So it's so surprising to have Adolin, the "princely" character brutally murder him before his plans come to fruition or he has any shot at redemption. Just thinking about the scene gives me goosebumps. Maybe my favorite Sanderson scene ever. So much raw emotion.

It's really weird to have so many different magic systems that actually make sense each in their own specific ways. It's like learning physics all over again. Watching the pieces fall into place is so great. That's one thing that's been tough for me going from Sanderson to Jordan. Sanderson explains his magic right away and I still barely know anything about The True Source 5 books deep.

Haha, I was really egging you on with that paragraph of questions, thanks for not biting. It's interesting that we saw Balefire in like book 3, then it was talked about in book 4, and now in book 5 we finally learn what it means and it was like...Wait...that was happening the whole time? When someone says not to use some sort of win-all magical power there better be a damn good reason, and that's the best one I could think of. I'm imagining all the horrible things that could possible happen. If this was a horror novel it would just end with some sort of fucked up balefire time paradox thing, haha. Logain is so interesting and I still know nothing about him. Min's prophecy has me very curious.

It might also be fun reading some of the books that relate to the Dark Tower universe. I can personally say that books like The Black House and Insomnia completely changed the way I looked at some of the final events. I've always stood by my belief that a lot of those are necessary for the DT experience.

Controversial opinion but I think I might like the second Mistborn better than Words of Radiance. They are at least very close. Epic does not even begin to describe it. The third was a perfect conclusion but something didn't quite match up for me compared to book 2.

I'm not into Rothfuss as much as some. I did love it, I think I gave book one 5 or 4 stars on goodreads, but I don't think he's as entertaining as Sanderson. For one thing it's an epic 1000+ page fantasy novel told in first person, so no multiple povs. And the main character is a bard in a Harry Potter esque school so that's automatically less interesting for me. But that's focusing on the bad, he's a ridiculously talented writer and paints the world beautifully.
