This album is a testament to how differently I approach EPs from albums, even from my favorite artists. Up until 5-10 years ago, I normally didn’t even bother with EPs, and now, even when I do, it’s often like they’re out of reach, hazy; it’s like I go in already frustrated, thinking it can’t possibly hit the same was as a well sequenced full length album, so I don’t give it anywhere near the time of day I would a proper album. For the past few days, I’ve been enamored with disc one, with Things hitting particularly hard, and it’s baffling that these songs came out months ago, I listened to them a few times, and they did next to nothing for me; it’s like I refused to properly hear them until they were part of something bigger.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I'm actually an EP truther which seems to be a minority opinion on this site lmao. think a well-paced and thoughtfully made EP (eg Jar of Flies) can go toe-to-toe with some of my favourite albums

This has massively grown on me. Comfortably my favourite thing he’s done since BI, BI.

I definitely am treating them as two different releases in my head.

My major critique of this record is that SABLE is cut at 45rpm which pushes AWARDS SEASON to the b side by itself…..like no.

It is so, so annoying. Just have a blank B side.

Just cut it at 33 1/3 and keep it all together. I really don’t need the 45rpm cut. Fable is cut at 33. What are we doing?

This is almost as annoying as the triple LP of Apologies to the Queen Mary which puts “Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts” and “I’ll Believe in Anything” on separate sides, killing one of the best song transitions in indie rock history.

i really need to get a single LP of that one, one of my favorite albums ever, it should be perfectly split between side A and B after “Same Ghost Every Night”.

I haven't gotten this on vinyl yet, and hearing how they split it up makes me want to buy it less, lol.

Did this even need to be a double LP?

Conceptually it makes sense to split them, and I’m imagining they reused the extra SABLE, EP vinyl that they made so it’s economically viable. But based on the track lengths, they could have easily split it at Walk Home / Day One and fit everything on one record.

In the album’s defense, the way fABLE is split on vinyl works really nicely, even if it is kind of short.

i don't think SABLE, had an initial vinyl release? maybe that was in the cards at one point, but it seems like one package was always the plan

Huh, my bad! I could have sworn I saw a $20 SABLE, EP on sale back in October. Can’t see it anywhere now, must have been mistaken.

no worries. yeah i remember seeing a ton of merch and digital copies for sale on his store, but never anything physical.

I might have felt different if I'd really spent a ton of time with the EP when it came out, but to my ears, the SABLE songs lead into the FABLe songs really well, to the point where splitting them up on the vinyl would not be my preference. Then again, I'm usually a proponent of keeping an album to a single LP if it's possible to do, and this album being two minutes longer than BI, BI would seem to indicate that it could have easily been done that way.

I didn't say it cause I figured people would jump all over me, but I think if this had just been released as-is without the EP having come first, like 85% of people who have an issue with it wouldn't notice.

They build really nicely as a kind of prelude into the second half. This thing works really well as whole.
