Saw it in a news article about the songs going on streaming and now I can't find it. Will do some digging here and post if i find it. But I'm pretty sure it said it was in one of the YouTube videos for one of the new songs.
Sooooo.. At Eaux Claires and had just finished watching The National play one of the best sets I’ve ever seen. They kind of saved a lackluster weekend. Directly after there was a “peoples mixtape” set on the other main stage. Last year it was basically an impromptu jam session that wasn’t really worth watching at all. For that reason we started heading for the exit. We were getting ready to go but heard JV singing so had to stop for at least a second. And hooooooly shit. He played “Hey Ma” and a bunch of the other TU dance songs. He brought guests out every other song. Including Phoebe Bridgers and others covering “Everything Is Free”. He sang his cover of “Love More” with Sharon Van Etten herself.. And he played 89. He played 89. Still giggling about it. Was positive I’d never hear that song again. What a great night.
Let's just say I'm usually beaming with excitement and inspiration for weeks after the fest. Not the same story this year. The entire vibe of the fest was very off. There wasn't a "family reunion" type of atmosphere like there was years prior. I think this has a lot to do with the surprise lineup absolutely not being worth the money and obvious corner cutting. There wasn't any screens this year for the main stage. Overflowing bathrooms. Extremely long bathroom lines. Half the food vendors there were last year. It felt like literally half the festival. It was my first year getting the Chippewa(VIP) pass. Basically there's a large shaded area by the main stage where can you go and enjoy a buffet twice a day and get 2 alcoholic beverages at a time. We were really excited walking in Friday regardless of the lineup but ended up waiting in line for my free drinks for 45+ minutes. It was a trend that continued throughout the day. On top of that we were waiting for 20+ minutes for bathrooms in a VIP AREA. The food wasn't very good and I went up 15 minutes before they were set to stop serving and everything was already packed up. They ran out of most of the free beers and wine and liquor wasn't included (it was all 3 years prior). You could also only walk out of the area with 1 drink. Encouraging people to slam drinks in hot weather in order to leave and go watch some music. This meme sums it up pretty well tbh
Yup that sounds pretty shitty. I’m avoiding festivals in general from now on. I did Panorama last year solely for Frank Ocean but it will take an insane headliner like that to get me to attend.
I’ve had nothing but good experiences at festivals, except for Outside Lands 2016 when the whole crowd around me was talking throughout Radiohead
Just wanted to add another post because that was getting long. They did a great job of listening to complaints from day 1 and made awesome changes for day 2. There were basically no lines for anything on Saturday. Day 2 this year was one of the best days I've ever had at the fest, for sure. I rolled in a little late that today so the first full set I saw was Phoebe (which was at 4). She was fantastic, and every set I saw from that point on was seriously great. Moses Sumney was directly after her. --- I had expected for this to be a yearly thing for me but I'm not so sure now. They didn't release the lineup because they knew they wouldn't have sold very many tickets if they did. Which feels like deception under the guise of experimentation. I would not have paid nearly $500 for this lineup. I mean just look at it compared to years prior... Those lineups were MORE than worth it. My girlfriend and her sister trusted me because I trusted the creators to provide a great experience and they really just didn't deliver. Justin basically confirmed Sufjan, Father John Misty, Arcade Fire, Patti Smith, etc through twitter and none of them were there. Getting in and seeing the lineup was a borderline punch in the gut, tbh. One more thing.. how has there not been a Volcano Choir or DeYarmond Edison set? All of the band members are there performing each year and we haven't gotten anything. Either one of those sets would've helped immensely this year and I imagine would be pretty soft on the budget considering all the members are already there?? Both members of Sylvan Esso were there and they also would have been a great mid-day pick me up, but nope. The interactive art installations were incredible though. Always are.
Frank & Solange totally made Panorama worth it for me, and I felt the crowd there wasn't that bad (they were mostly indifferent, but that's better than like, being actively annoying). My experience was positive enough that I decided to do Gov Ball this year, but god it was so so bad that I'll never do a festival at Randall's again.
FWIW I'm feeling better about it today now. I still did see alot of incredible things and some great 1 time only collaborations. Never thought I'd get to hear the TU Dance songs live. Certainly never thought I'd hear the Messina version of "Satisfied Mind" either.. Also my girlfriend and her sister walked away huge fans of Phoebe Bridgers and The National so that's cool. I'll be back.
It's great to hear them in such good quality. One of the songs in that 10 minute long video is "1867". So it looks like were going to eventually have recorded versions of that and 89 that were both originally recorded for 22AM. r/boniver - Mystery track listing
Sorry for the confusion. I meant that "Heaven - 1867" is the song that has the actual sound of a woman crying/laughing. Here's a video of part of it. The guitar part from the promo video comes in after this video ends. I'm curious if the sound of the woman crying/laughing was part of the 22AM version of the song or if it was added for Come Through. I'm very familiar with "Naeem". Love that song and was lucky enough to see him play it the first time.
Ahhh yeah, okay. Duh. Was wondering what the acoustic song was in the video!! I thought I had seen every available video from the Mass Moca show so thanks for that. Not very often is there something JV related I haven't seen.
