Brand New is great. The lyrical content alone is deeply emotional and relatable for a ton of people, so that definitely meets the definition of good.
i like brand new but thats not exactly a good explanation of why they're "good," its vague enough that anything could be termed good
I guess it's something you have to get into in your teen years. Their lyrics are incredibly corny to me. But then again, I'd probably think the same about AOF/Thursday if I hadn't gotten into them when I was young. I like some Brand New songs. I don't think they're BAD by any means. I just have never understood people calling them one of the best bands of all time or something like that. I don't go into threads about Brand New to talk about how I don't think they're all that though. Which was my main point in bringing them up. I totally get the appeal.
Then what meets the criteria? Is the reason I think Brand New is good better/worse than why you think they're good? Sure, some could say their songwriting is simple, but I could also come back and say that's what the song called for, ya know? So in that sense, I could say they're great songwriters. I guess it's all pretty subjective
I get it. Personally, I love whatever Justin does anyways. I've been revisiting the latest Volcano Choir album lately and have been obsessed again.
Same here. I can certainly admit I'm a fanboy. A lot of his unreleased singles (St. Peters Hood, March, etc) I enjoy more than certain Bon Iver songs either. Hazeltons deserves so much more recognition. Bummer you didn't get to make it to Eaux Claires this year. I'm just very excited for everyone to hear this properly. I can't believe some of y'all haven't even listened to the live versions. I don't have that king of willpower. I've listened to the studio leak 50+ times at this point. Trying to ween myself off of it.
your post basically boiled down to "theyre good because theyre good to people" which is reductive and in-substantive. i dont mean to call you out or anything but it was just kind of a very hollow reasoning.
I think 33 God is my favorite of the three released but I'm not gonna wear this one out just yet like I did the other two.
I was trying to stay simple, and that's one of the many reasons I think they're "good." I get I was being vague, sorry for that. Their lyrical content has always stood out to me, especially the last two records.
In other news, I've fended off listening to this album besides Over Soon, but really like reading people's thoughts on it. Better than the rest of his discog?
I'm the wrong person to ask. I could never choose between the 3 LPs. I will say that it just seems like the next logical step from BI, BI. There's 2 songs, "29 #Strafford APTS" and "8 (Circle)" that I would put over anything from the previous 2 records.
I don't think it's better than Bibi but it comes close. It's definitely a solid addition to the catalog. Wish it were longer, even though it's about the same length as the others it feels like it goes by too fast.
After a week of listening, I think this is my favourite of the year so far. So many great little details
