Just got this album in the mail and it came with a really nice signed letter talking about how thankful she is for my purchase supporting the various people who helped create it. Enjoying my first spin now and I really love the song choices she made.
A couple friends and I challenged ourselves to rank every album so I've been spending a lot of time going through the 80s/90s stuff and at times its really tough lol
Post it in here when you're done! I just updated mine, most of the ones I haven't heard in a while are definitely in that decade.
I like the 80’s albums, there’s a buncha knockouts Jokerman Sweetheart Like You Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight I’ll Remember You Trust Yourself Tight Connection To My Heart Brownsville Girl Dark Eyes Silvio (!!) Ninety Miles An Hour Down A Dead End Road You Wanna Ramble Driftin Too Far From Sure and all of Oh Mercy of course
And the Christian Trilogy, which is just amazing Precious Angel When He Returns A Satisfied Mind Saved In The Garden (the song is especially great live, studio version is a little stiff) Shot Of Love Heart Of Mine Property Of Jesus Watered-Down Love (!!!) The Groom’s Still Waiting At The Altar In The Summertime Every Grain Of Sand I also really like Caribbean Wind from Trouble No More
I can’t believe Blonde on Blonde exists. It’s never been top 5 for me but it’s all I can listen to recently. Him holding out the last note of every verse on “One of Us Must Know” is one of my favorite things in his entire discography.
That song has the very rare distinction of sounding like no other song that’s ever been made by anyone in history. If you’re in the mood for that sound and feeling, you have a one-song playlist
Yeah, the melody on that song is proof that he was tapped into some magic. He starts way behind the beat and kind of on the outskirts of the root note, and by the chorus he’s leading a straightforward stomp of a hook.
I would like to support the above assertions that "Jokerman" rules and that Oh Mercy is a great album (could've been better with "Series of Dreams" but alas)
Everything on there works, even when it shouldn't. By all accounts the pseudo-hit-mongering of "I Want You" shouldn't have worked, but it really does.
Yeah, I think it’s the left turn of it. That jangly guitar and organ line echoing the chorus melody would normally be way too cheesy, but he never does it so it’s charming. I always found the back half of this album (especially the last 5 songs) a bit too drawn out and inscrutable for its length. The songs are undeniable and work well on their own, but as a chunk they tend to crush my spirit 45min into a 72min album.
Going back and really diving into Dylan’s catalogue (been a fan for a while but there’s so much material). How did I never listen to Street-Legal before? No one ever talks about it but this thing rules
“Tomorrow Night” off Good As I Been To You has become one of my favorite songs over the last few months. He’s really got a killer run of late night music, I need to make a playlist.
