Lots of artists don’t play their parts on recordings and lots of engineers go back after a session and redo the parts so they sound better. More prevalent with a producer and team like Feldman probably. Travis publicly said Tom played to Pro tools tracks live when they were out there in the press after Tom left the second time. I am not too particularly surprised or worked up to hear this. It’s funny an engineer would respond in a comment about it on a drumming video. Poor form lol. I accept that the whole Skiba era was blink almost back engineering what make blink who they are and making music that reflects that. They picked John Feldman for a reason to bring that to the table. Also there’s so many videos of making of BTS where engineers and songwriters and playing the parts and engineers and producers regularly post what parts they did on socials.
Interesting, but not really surprised. Seems like they really wanted to try and capture an EOTS pt2 sound to bring blink back into the limelight and I wonder if they didn't trust Skiba to do that at first. Truly was a hired gun at that point. Nine is another story. I definitely feel Matt's influence there, no question.
I mean seriously though it had to be an extremely stressful, hard and awkward recording process. Mark and Travis had to prove they could put out a good album without Tom, their last album was met with mixed reception, working with a new member that had a completely different style than Tom. Just a lot going on. If the album flopped who knows where the band would be today.
Artist for today’s show poster just posted his for sale, you can get an artist signed foil edition for $69 shipped which is $11 cheaper than the non signed ones at the show: Blink 182 - Poster 9.11.25 - Darien Center NY
Just realized I only need to somehow see them play Every Time I Look For You and I will have heard all of TOYPAJ live now. edit: shut the fuck up I said (to myself), I made a mistake and forgot about Shut Up
They’ve played Shut Up before? That and ETILFY are the only two I have left (assuming they do Online Songs and Rollercoaster at Riot Fest this week)
They did them last night at Four Chord Fest so you should be good! Would be sick to see Bored to Death with Skiba again in Chicago too but doubt they’ll do that..
Played through Lifeforms today in light of the Ilan show with the Foo Fighters. Best record from them in years. I don’t need another record from them but a couple of fest dates would be awesome. Seeing the show pre covid was pretty incredible. Psyched for Ilan. Dude is a monster and his open handed playing is so fun to watch live.
Is anyone else noticing Travis settling into a less flashy more tight live performance. I was watching a bunch of old live videos from the untitled era a while back. Fun to see him always updating. Seems like his role as a producer on OMT was a big leap forward in giving the song what it needs rather than going completely bananas. Seems to be happening live on this tour too.
Drum solo is def. dialed back on this run too, basically just the bridge part in Roller Coaster before Mark & Tom come back in..
I agree the change in his drum writing is owed to production duties. That said, his fills have calmed down in performance in favor of being washed in flanger at every other turn haha.
It really is genuinely sweet seeing Tom happy in this band again, and understanding why we love them and need them.
I really appreciate that the OMT tour was about the band being back and sounding more excited and better than ever and this tour seems to be more about them being grateful and present. I think the deep cuts sprinkled in are cooler than an anniversary tour for TOYPAJ. I think the next release is going to be nuts. I truly believe they can reach the heights of Untitled in terms of the three of them cooking up something that redefines blink in this modern iteration.
I agree. During the Untitled era, Mark was still holding resentment for Tom and BCR. So this might be the first time since TOYPAJ where they all seem like they're finally on the same page again, personally and creatively. OMT was proof of that, and now that they're even more comfortable, Mark is fully healthy, I can only see them going up from here on the next album, and that is beyond exciting since OMT is still my most listened to Blink album since it came out.
I was incredibly lukewarm on One More Time when it dropped. But it's aged so good with time. And the bonus LP's worth of b-sides or whatever you call that are super solid too. So I'm glad I gave it a second chance after simmering on it for a few months... So I was already pretty stoked about seeing them this Friday. But watching all of these videos (and seeing the discussion in here about how happy they all seem, how great Tom sounds, etc.) is making me really excited about it all. Can't wait!
