As long as they pull it off, I don’t really care. But that clip they posted makes me think that won’t entirely be the case.

  3. The untitled album came out 20 years ago. What they made is a natural progression of who they are, and what they are as musicians/songwriters, in 2023.

Untitled will always have a special place in my heart as the first "rock" album I ever got into after years of boy bands and Britney spears. My cousin showed me I Miss You and Here's Your Letter in 4th grade and I fell in love.

Then I bought the album from Strawberries, my dad read the lyrics, threw it in the trash, and bought me the clean version lol

I don't think this album will be derivative of old stuff. Edging felt like a song that lives entirely on its own in their catalog.

I know it came out 20 years ago. They already said they’re trying to keep it “as blink as possible”. Which tells me they might be trying to emulate an old sound instead of being “what they are as musicians in 2023”. And Edging isn’t helping the case either.

  9. I think "Edging" is what they want to be as musicians/songwriters in 2023, which is why they wrote it. (And it rules.) And I think that it's just fine to have a "natural progression" of who they are be writing (more) great pop-punk songs. That's what they're the best in the world at doing.

  10. I just don't know why no one's asked the real question yet.

Has Jason heard the new Blink single yet?

@Jason Tate has had enough of the endless daily speculations and is dropping nukes in the thread this afternoon lol.

I really wish there was a new song out tonight. I could use some cheering up. This week has been a depression-filled shit heap of a week.

There are some cool tracks on that last AVA record, but I really don’t get the love for Automatic.

It’s fine, nothing remarkable about it at all.

I didn’t say Edging want good or anything. I love it, I just don’t want an album filled with songs like that. I don’t know why you get so defensive about this band. I want them to make music that naturally progressive. Not putting them in a bubble having to write strictly “pop punk” songs like what was on California.

If they want to sound like classic blink pop punk in 2023, writing anything else wouldn’t be “natural.”

  18. I'm not defensive of anything except the idea that making music like "Edging" isn't, or can't be, a natural progression for an artist. I've always rejected the idea from critics/fans that the way to "grow" or "progress" is to write music that's more in line with the standard definition of historical guitar rock music. "Oh they matured because the tuned down a step." :eyeroll:

(I also don't agree that California was only strictly pop-punk songs. "Los Angeles," "Sober," the title track, all very much fit in a definition of songwriting progression.)

  19. I’m just a sucker for 80s pop Tom. Automatic and Always.

Fucking love Los Angeles, California, and Home Is Such A Lonely Place. Best Skiba-era songs.

I definitely like that one, probably my favorite on Nine

Generally, I think the word progressive is loaded when talking about Blink. Untitled was lightning in a bottle and a very special album that exists as its own moment in their career. Anytime the word "progressive" comes up people seem to mean more of that sound.

Edging is a rad song that feels very fresh and a great example of each individual member bringing their A game. I hope the whole album is in that spirit. It doesn't mean the songs will sound like carbon copies.

  24. Shorter version of my thoughts. I think there's a bias toward a certain sound being considered "progression" or "mature" or whatever and it's pretty basic straight sad white guy guitar rock, the kind that that used to be what music critics liked most when music critics sort of mattered the most.

Like, someone writing an incredible pop song if you used to play hair metal never would be considered, by the critics, as an artist maturing or progression forward as an artist. It's looked down upon, even still. And that's even after we know that some of the greatest rock songwriters of all time are/were incredible pop writers!

For me Untitled sounds like them pushing themselves forward trying to see what are they capable of. Edging sounds like they feel comfortable being blink 182.
