Now I Know This World Isn’t Spinning Just For Me Prestigious

I’ve been watching a different show each morning to celebrate 182 day coming up Saturday. Monday was Cleveland, yesterday was Sacramento. Today is Seattle. I’m loving the fact we can see all of these in full and good quality. Also love the different banter every night.

Tom: “go quit your job tomorrow! All of you! Drop out of school and join a punk band!”

Mark: “life advice….from someone who quit the band twice.”

Tom; “it was the wrong decision. We all have room to grow. Sometimes when your band members walk in on you jacking off…12 times…you have to take a break”

I don’t go to shows anymore but when I saw plus 44 in CT, I was lucky enough to catch the drumstick he threw into the crowd. Still have it.

Dove into the Wiki for blink today and two things stuck out to me:
    • "[Travis] states DeLonge abruptly quit sometime in mid-2014, and rejoined the following day." - I don't remember hearing about this at all, ever.
    • The timeline of albums from Cheshire to Untitled were all 2 years apart. What's wild about this is how VASTLY different each album is and how different the era of the band was. From rambunctious EOTS era to Emo TOYPAJ in 2 years? Just crazy to think about the leaps for each album era and it was only 2 years
    • Cali > Nine was 3 years but seems like the same phase/era
Is this because technology was constantly changing and evolving around that Y2K era? Just interesting to me that we went from EOTS to Untitled thematically in the span of 4 years. Maybe it was due to them being more desperate to get product out back then. Pardon my ramblings.

2 years between albums isn't that crazy, back then or now

That wasn't my point. My point was the drastic change in album feel and era/phase for the band in 2 years.

Would love to get back to a typical 2 year cycle for blink.

Allow me to introduce you to the Beatles

  13. the 2 year jump from Dude Ranch to Enema of the State will always impress the fuck out of me. Sounds like 2 different bands. Obviously, adding Travis Barker, having a bigger budget, adding Jerry Finn, getting world class mixing/mastering engineers involved was all part of the stew there.

I think another key factor is Tom's growth.

Mark was pretty much always a fantastic lyricist. His lyrics on Dude Ranch are some of his very best. But pretty much all of Tom's songs up until mayyybe TOYPAJ were just goofy songs. TOYPAJ is when he started to get a little bit more serious, and then he went fully into the serious stuff with Box Car Racer, and then brought that newfound "maturity" to Blink's Untitled album, AVA, Neighborhoods, etc.

I think they were just running on all cylinders from 1997 to 2003. In that time, we got Dude Ranch, a new drummer, Jerry Finn, Enema of the State, TOYPAJ, Box Car Racer, The Transplants, and Untitled. All of that in just 6 years is insane.

  14. 100% The Beatles were only a BAND for TENNN years and they released 13 official albums?, and then an absolute shit ton of other stuff. That shit's B-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-S and on a whole other planet compared to every other band.

jerry finn was so vital to making blink sound cohesive during that era.

i always wonder what the band would sound like nowadays if he was still around blink continued working with him.

Just incredible band that also profited from how different Paul’s and John’s voices were and how amazingly they sounded together. Also same tension lol.
Also Sgt.Pepper was practically their Untitled.

  20. For sure. Every album has a couple serious Tom songs. But for the most part, he was mainly a silly billy until box car racer.
