    Things have changed.

Neither is super good, but the bad songs on CC are more forgivable because they didn't know what they were doing.

  2. Cheshire Cat has charm to it, even in its lowest points. Neighborhoods' lows feel much lower because they were already very well established and it was coming after Untitled, and it was their "reunion album." It was the first time where I didn't feel aligned with my favorite band, and that was even harder to come to terms with than the album itself.

  3. "Peggy Sue" on TMTATS show really shows how there's some great song writing on CC.

It's rough in places, but I still have a really big crush on it as my second Blink album. I got into the band with Dude Ranch and then discovered CC and it kinda cemented them as my first favorite band.

I actually remember hearing Ghost on the Dance Floor for the first time and feeling ecstatic. Then, Natives, and the guitar riff that reminded me of M+Ms. Heart’s All Gone going hard as hell. I have a fond memory of my introductions to that album.

blink is how I got into California skate punk, and I still listen to a lot of it now. Cheshire Cat isn’t the best skate punk album, but it’s still a solid album from that scene while being uniquely blink. Mark and Tom’s songwriting voices come through strongly, steeped in their influences as they were. It’s a fast, raw album from a very young, hungry band with two really great songwriters starting to figure themselves out a bit.

I think I listened to dude ranch then enema then take off then Cheshire (other than carousel).

My problem with Cheshire is that I can't get past the poor production of it.

Spending An Evening With Mark Hoppus tonight. Not gonna not cry, I think.

The chat is mysterious and important.

Exact same for me. I remember my mom buying the Dude Ranch and Cheshire/Buddha cd's for my birthday, and I'd sneak into her room everyday to sit and dissect the artwork through the cellophane and imagine what each song would sound like. haha! Man I miss those days...

My favorite song on the live album. The riff in that bridge that's not on the Cheshire album, still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. So damn good.

The book inspired me to listen to Cheshire Cat for the first time in years and I was surprised at how much more I liked it now than I did as a kid.

Wasting Time? Strings? Peggy Sue? Bangers. I also get the chorus to Depends stuck in my head a lot.

    Ron Iver.

I haven’t listened to the Mark Tom and Travis show in years. Need to do that after my recent Cheshire Cat revisit.

OMT is on repeat nonstop this week. Would love a live debut of TERRIFIED. I know this is more of an indie band thing, but it would be rad if they did a short run playing OMT front to back before ending this era. It’s just so good.

    Are You Watching Closely?

I remember looking up what cathode rays were after hearing TV for the first time. But yeah, M&Ms, Wasting Time, Tv, Touchdown Boy were all glimpses at what they were capable of.

Finished my read last night. Agreed with most sentiments that I would've taken another 100 pages to expand on the Neighboords/DED/Skiba/OMT era.

Really liked all of the backstories to all of lyrics and easter eggs he tossed in there (i.e. starting the +44 chapter with the opening line to Lycanthrope)

I went to a music shop after school in 2004 (second year of high school) and used what little money I had from chores, school lunches, etc. to buy Cheshire Cat. I sat in McDonald's, ate some food and read the liner notes over and over, obsessed.

Moments like that I value so much. Sounds silly, but so formative that they stick with you.

All this talk made me want to do a discog run. Listened to Buddha and Cheshire Cat all the way through for the first time in years and they were both better than what I remember. Lots of gems with Wasting Time probably the best of the non Carousel + M&M’s songs.

Also crazy to go from Dude Ranch to Enema and see the impact that both Travis and Jerry had.

I'm annoyed Mark didn't include the moment that I got a photo with him in a tiny pub here in Melbourne in his book. Really thought it was integral to his story.

mark's memoir also got me reminiscing about the flyswatter demo. i spent so much time listening to that after downloading it off napster. pretty sure i had that saved to a floppy disk then i would listen to it over and over again on winamp.

that demo introduced me to NOFX and Dino Jr. i learned both songs on the guitar thanks to it.

  22. I reeeeeally wish that chapter 23 just said “nobody likes you when you’re 23” and then it moves onto chapter 24.

My favorite thing about the read was just getting the sense that Mark is a normal dude. He's seen so much success and gone through so much craziness but it's not changed him at all.

Also disappointed the +44 talk was on chapter 43 and not chapter 44.
