Man, my book arrives next week and I’m having a really bad time avoiding “spoilers” and podcasts. >:(

  2. Three Pianos by Andrew McMahon is great.

Butch Walker's is clearly ghost written, but not bad.

    I liked Dave Grohl's too.

Geoff Rickly's is very different, but well written and tackles hard shit.

The others I think were mentioned already.

I had no idea Geoff Rickly had an autobiography.
Will be picking up that and Walking Disaster once I'm done with Mark's book.

Things would probably have been 10000 times better if they had an actual producer to reign everyone in and “be the bad guy”. Aaron Rubin on one of the interviews he gave about OMT talked a lot about getting Tom back into blink mode and not everything has to be a 2 minute intro or outro (paraphrasing here of course). His example was originally Dance With Me had this big long intro and Aaron was like “No cut the intro and get to the song”.

There are songs on OMT that sound like AVA but they work much better because everyone in the band has input in it and make it work because they are all invested where a song like Love Is Dangerous is AVA with Mark and Travis and that song just doesn’t work.

But I totally see Tom’s point of view and would be frustrated too. Glad all 3 realized there could be common ground and they can make things work no matter what the song sounds like.

I don’t think Darkside was quite finished yet and that’s why it was released 3rd, remember Happy Days was the 2nd ‘single’ released.

Mark said they wanted to cross into pop territory and probably thought BIOMY and IRWIHY were the best shots at that. Especially since Tim produced BIOMY and had a strong pop producing resume.

Speaking of similar books, has anyone read the Bad Religion book Do What You Want? or Greg Graffin’s memoir?

Joe Trohman's book was very enjoyable if we're talking scene related books.

Wow, can't believe I forgot Joe Trohman and Andrew McMahon's books in my list earlier. Those were both great.

Case in point that blink died with Finn. So many places have said how great he was when the band would butt heads during Enema. I'm sure it was even more on untitled.

Question for the thread then - does anyone here think any non-Finn produced work is better than what he did with the band? Personally, nothing post-untitled comes close to their work with Finn. It's not even limited to the production value, he brought out the best song writing in all of them while also keeping them happy.

    Fuck brain bleeds.

Plenty of songs on OMT that I like as much as a lot of the Finn era tracks.

Yea, OMT is certainly up there with the Finn era material.

posting all my spoilery thoughts on the biggest stand out parts of the book below. ( I don’t know how to do the hover blackout thing lmao otherwise i would.)

Loved the part about his childhood. The early part about being a peacemaker and not wanting any animosity and that being the best capture of his entire life was wild.

Really loved the extended parts about early life events and how they made their way into songs. will never hear the “apple juice” line the same way again.

Untitled is probably the most documented part of their career, I was stoked to get some new bits in the book.

Mark’s take on AVA was pretty brutal. He’s always been pretty kind. His summation of the album “some good songs, but a lot of boring drawn out stuff. the anti blink.” was wild.

I was bummed +44 and the skiba era were glossed over. There’s less than a page about the whole NINE era. It was the first i’ve seen him say they made a concerted effort to do a pop cross over and that it wasn’t effective. He talked briefly about being in the studio post reunion but any bits about OMT were completely omitted.

Pop Disaster tour drama was was surprising he was so frank about everything. I feel like green day publicly talks shit tho and it was lol to hear his piece about it. also insane they’ve asked repeatedly to run it back and green day won’t do it.

jerry fin saying no to AVA but yes to +44 and how that impacted tom was a big one.

Mark losing a diving partner, the deer in the road, and all the ominous life and death stuff was written really well and drove home a lot of his OCD tendencies. I thought that was executed expertly.

Modlife stuff was insane and I completely forgot about the debacle release of DED. Tom seemed completely unhinged at that time. They roasted him pretty hard in the press at the time, but it was worse than they even lead on at the time. Mark said it in the book but it really does seem like Tom’s divorce was rock bottom and the dude in blink today is a new and healed man.

I LOVED the part about Mark and Travis leaving Tom with his synthesizer for minutes to punish him for getting trashed at reading. I’ve watched that performance so many times and it was always so strange how long that went on for. got a big laugh from me.

Loved the book. It was way more enjoyable than the Travis book. Mark is such a rad dude and I loved the deep dive from his perspective. Heightened my appreciation for blink in this era back and as strong as ever. I love they finished with Coachella. The unhinged celebration in the forum during that set is a blink core memory for me with plenty of amazing IRL moments.

the Bad Religion book is pretty good. They’re a very straight forward band and their bio reflects that. A friend of mine said their bio book was boring compared to NOFX, lol.

also Laura Jane Grace’s memoir (also co-written with Dan Ozzi) is awesome. The Replacements’ bio, Trouble Boys, is a great read, though at times super fucking dark.

Speaking of the apple juice in the hall part...someone has to make a list of all the lyric and song references sprinkled throughout the book. When he accidentally took acid and said he felt like he was fighting gravity. There's a lot.

The chapter about +44 he quotes the opening line from Lycanthrope in the first chapter and I believe there’s a few lines from Go.
