Hey Kylie! Australia rprznt. ...not into her music, but the UK love her so this makes sense. Hopefully OMT continues its trajectory, it's getting some good airplay here too.
Whole album is filled with gems tbh A little something just to take off the edge A little more and I'll fall off the planet entirely Lay rotting where I fall I'm dead from bad intentions Suffocated and embalmed And now all our dreams are cashed in Just off the top of my head
When blink are at the top of their game I don't think the lyrics owe anything to other scene bands whose lyricism is held in high regard here: Jimmy Eat World, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy or Paramore. Blink are just more inconsistent. Their widespread image as the naked running band doesn't help. If we're going just by pop-punk the only writers I clearly put above peak blink are Justin Pierre and Soupy.
Not sure I'd limit the discussion just to the "pop-punk" bands, but Jim Adkins, Blake Schwarzenbach, Ari Katz, and Kris Roe off the top of my head all get to a different level than Blink does lyrically. Because Blink's strength is not their lyrics. Blink's attempt at the dark metaphors on untitled compared what Davey does that same year in Sing the Sorrow, for just one example, are just not even in the same ballpark.
Dear You lyrically has some excellence. I watched the Jawbreaker doc for the first time about a year ago and it's a shame the album wasn't loved at the time.
This is the cure: the same as the symptom Simple and pure: break to keep fixing Patiently nurse, patient and nurse This is the part I wouldn't show you The part where you say, "I don't even know you." This is your cue Be glad that it's through Like .. that reads like you'd pull it out of an old library book (and sounds awesome in the song). Gah, now I just want to go listen to Jawbreaker all night.
I mean, let's say I considered Jimmy Eat World. I could take one of their best albums - Futures - and, just off the top of my head, I don't think there's any good writing going on in "Just Tonight...", "Work" or "Drugs Or Me". Of course Jim has better lyrics... Just as "First Date" or "Fuck A Dog" aren't all there is to blink (which, I concede, has much lower lows than JEW over their discography).
I'm going to regret this, but what the hell does "slime you out" mean? Slime like Gak? Slime like Dragon Quest? What is a slime in this instance? Rimiru Tempest???
This has always been such a weird argument to me. Lyrics play a big part in music for me, and I'm a big fan of blink's lyrics on Untitled, Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs especially. They're not all terrific, but I do think they're usually pretty good. Lyrics on Enema and TOYPAJ are a big reason why I don't return to those records often.
I swear to god the lyrics for I Was a Teenage Teenager and Fuck Time are better than some of the shit on this album. It might feel better in context of the song as a whole, but as of right now its pretty dire imo.
Lyrically, my a-game go to over the last number of years has been The Menzingers. Across all their offerings from OTIP onwards, really speaks to where I was at the time to where I am now. 20's/30's/breakups/friendships/relationships/parties/getting older. Does this make their lyrics good? Or just easy to connect with based on life circumstances?
I didn't really connect with After the Party or Hello Exile but I still recognized the lyrics were good
Yeah Menzingers are very good at making me feel nostalgia for things that never happened to me. Brian Fallon too.
