Jesus I just pointed out that they used more writers than I thought and you guys whine and cry like little bitches. I didn’t even portray it as a bad thing. Is 10 not a lot? Okay, had no idea. Just thought it was interesting when I saw it on Rubin’s story.
Look, at this point, I dont care if Tom or Mark fully wrote the song but if someone helped him sound better for it, fuck it, Im in. I say "better" because yeah some co-writes youre like "Wat..." but I love this record so something was working.
It’s pretty clear how much these guys, especially Tom, benefit from working with a team of people who know what they’re talking about haha. Tom hasn’t sounded or consistently wrote this good since Untitled.
I would argue Lifeforms but because Ilan AND Aaron Rubin were big factors for Lifeforms and then now his writing for blink... I would kinda agree. He just needs the right people in his corner.
When I like a song by a band, I don’t immediately check to make sure they’re the only ones who wrote it. If it’s a good song, it’s a good song.
Stars are ones you’ve favourited on the Now Playing screen. The circles on the album listing are popular ones.
Interesting, and it does clear up why these articles reference stars while the website had dots, so I thank you for that information. However! The real revelation is that based on the album's Apple Music page, the songs with dots are the same ones that Kibbles said had stars, meaning they were right about the favorited songs from the very beginning! (cue lightning strike and dramatic music)
Cut Me Off is surprisingly good, one of my favorite blink b-sides - just as good if not better than the TOYPAJ bonus tracks
Cut me Off and See You are doing nothing for me. I feel like they lack the emotion of the rest of the album and were recorded just to push album sales like they did. The TOYPAJ bonus tracks are TOP blink-182 and were scrapped to make room for The Rock Show and First Date. If not, we probably would have heard the term “Tom Heavy Album” by 2001.
As far as I know we have no idea at what point in the recording process SEE YOU & CUT ME OFF were recorded so I'm not sure where you're coming up with the theory they were recorded specifically as bonus tracks to drive sales. More likely they didn't fit the overall vibe of the album or they thought 19 songs was too much and those two got cut. I've also never heard this theory that the TOYPAJ bonus tracks were cut for First Date & Rock Show although it is true that First Date and Rock Show were written late in the TOYPAJ sessions after the label/management said they didn't think there was a true "blink single" on the record they heard.
Yeah I find it hard to believe that blink would write and record 2 songs in less than 5 days (they played WWWY Fest on Friday and Saturday) just to include it as bonus tracks to push album sales. Like you said they were probably recorded already but left off due to album flow or they were always planned to be released at a later date. I’ve never heard that about TOYPAJ either I think that’s another assumption. I think Tom said he originally recorded What Went Wrong because a lot of bands were putting an acoustic song on albums around that time but it wasn’t included on the album because they didn’t feel it fit with the other songs.
See You And Cut Me Off were tracks 6 and 7 on the original tracklisting. The notepad photo Travis posted can be deciphered as the below: TAKE ME IN [UNRELEASED] ANTHEM PART 3 DANCE WITH ME TURPENTINE MORE THAN YOU KNOW SEE YOU CUT ME OFF FELL IN LOVE TERRIFIED BLINK WAVE OTHER SIDE EVERY OTHER WEEKEND [UNRELEASED] ONE MORE TIME EDGING YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT BAD NEWS -CHILDHOOD -R U STILL MINE [UNRELEASED] -DAMAGED / HURT (Released as HURT (INTERLUDE)) -JUST LET GO [UNRELEASED] -SHUT UP (Released as FUCK FACE) Song Database Listings credited to Mark Tom and Travis: Brain Candy Here We Go Song Database Listings credited to Dan Book & Mark: Forget Me Just A Dream 50 Ways Hell No *OTHER SIDE was the 5th song in this group...
going back to co-writing for a second... in this new Travis podcast interview, he is talking a little more about "Fell In Love" and he said this, which I found interesting: "I wrote the song, wrote all the lyrics and everything. My friend Ryan Tedder and my friend Nick were in this jam session, we didn't even mean to write a Blink song, we were just writing, doing all sorts of stuff. We always get together and just write songs. So I just had this idea and asked them to bust this out with me and it turned into "Fell in Love" and it's the one song on the album that's really based on my relationship." I thought that was interesting because it shows that sometimes artists/writers are just getting together to write music, seeing what happens, with no real finish line in mind. And then an idea that Travis brought in just organically turned itself into a Blink song. It's not always a band getting a group of writers together saying, "We want your help writing a Blink-182 song."
Don't forget the songs that were also registered and never released, like Brain Candy... I'm still interested to hear that one.
