From Buddha & Cheshire I could make a good EP of: Carousel M+Ms Touchdown Boy Wasting Time Peggy Sue Cacophony 21 Days The Girl Next Door But IMO you can't even compare these two albums to anything else in their catalog. If anything their purpose of existing is to show just how much Mark & Tom mastered their craft of songwriting in the following couple of years.
It isn't just one song. The production is very bad on Buddha, but the songwriting is good. The songs that I really enjoy from CC are on that album, they just sound worse. I think the difference is viewing the quality of the songs vs. the quantity of songs that you like. I hold those albums higher because the songs that I like (and I do like 12 on CC) I like much, much better than anything on Neighborhoods, Nine, California and this.
Nah. It’s both for me. I was speaking to the album context, hence the quantity aspect. But comparing song to song, I’d take the vast majority of their newer songs over Buddha or Cheshire songs.
Shit. I somehow have See You and Childhood as one song on my ranking. Fuck. I’ll fix it and post later. Luckily it came up pretty early before I ranked a ton of songs.
Blink is such a nostalgic band to all of us. I think that plays a huge part in our favorite albums. I’m 41, I was in high school from 96-2000. I listened to Cheshire Cat, Dude Ranch, Enema so much. I would 100% rather listen to Cheshire Cat over anything after TOYPAJI. Like, the new stuff doesn’t even come close to how much I love that album. But I’m sure that’s the sentimental connection. Also, I don’t think the production is bad on Cheshire. It just sounds like a 90’s punk record.
It’s too early for me to rank this album in the band’s catalogue properly, but as of this very moment: Enema TOYPAJ Dude Ranch Untitled One More Time… Nine California Cheshire Cat Neighborhoods Buddha
Yeah I haven’t listened to that album in full in years. Just looking at the track listing now and yeah the joke songs suck but there’s nothing unlistenable on it even songs like Strings and TV have ‘charm’ to it warts and all.
Agreed but the bigger crime is never recording Nipples Of Fury Part 2 or the follow up to Lunch called Dinner or even a prequel in Breakfast.
1. Take Off Your Pants and Jacket 2. Enema of the State 3. One More Time... 4. Untitled 5. Dude Ranch 6. Cheshire Cat 7. California Deluxe 8. Dogs Eating Dogs 9. Neighborhoods 10. California 11. Nine 12. Buddha (I dont really know how many times I've actually spun California or Nine)
Quality of recording on Buddha is the main reason I don’t go back much. But I’ll listen to Cheshire Cat anytime, as much as Cali or Nine, more than Neighborhoods. But the songs on Buddha are still great and can shine through rough production, I love Black Flag and a lot of old shitty sounding hardcore and skate punk. It can be part of the vibe.
I guarantee that if everyone put their age next to when they heard their favorite Blink album everyone’s choice would make sense. Dude Ranch (15)
Nah. Well, apparently mine would be age 37, One More Time according to the ranking. But I’m sure that’s some recency bias.
That’s pretty shocking to hear. Recency bias seems strong on that call. But stoked for you that you love the new record that much.
Yah, and since then it's been heavy Tom wise...and that's when the band lost their spark. With me at least. It's Mark and Tom. Not just Tom with Mark. Like, we don't get a Mark lead song until track 10. I mean lol what?
A gen z skater friend of mine’s favorite blink era is pre-Travis for what it’s worth. He loves Strings.
