I guess production and the music go hand in hand in my mind, and showing criticism/praise for one is unquestionably as valid for one as it is the other. It feels very natural that a part of discussing music would be the way that it… sounds. I wouldn’t find it odd for someone to like a movie but dislike the lighting and respond with “oh you think you’d do better?”
A completely serious Reddit topic: "Blinkwave has a Lifeforms sound… is the song title an intentional mashup of BLINKangelsandairWAVEs?"
I will say Aaron's explanation of the OMT first verse did quite literally change my perspective on the whole album (even though I still do not enjoy that song). You make a good point that touches on this - blink records have always sounded mainstream, or at least tried to. There are moments where that comes across on the full LP better than others, I love when they really crank it up at the end of Childhood. I've always had a guilty pleasure for how "overdone" it was on The Mark Tom and Travis show also.
I would if they were criticizing Jeff Cronenweth and can’t explain, to someone of his knowledge and stature, how to do it better. I dunno, maybe I trust SME’s more than I should.
Yeah there’s AI apps to try and isolate instruments. Some of them are decent but in the context of trying to learn songs
I commented on that Reddit drum post. The original sounds beefy and full, his version sounds weak and glitchy… I told him.. will probably get downvoted.
Someone’s gonna have AI sing on some fucking Beatles song that never had John’s voice before I die. This is where this goes isn’t it? Haha.
My production take: this is the best album Travis has ever produced and while I was always interested in what he was doing musically, this album has me fully invested in him as a producer
i can think of two major rock producers whose records always sound like shit (rick rubin and jacknife lee) and this blink album is nowhere near that level. the drums are loud but it doesn't keep me from hearing anything else
this did come up ages ago in the blink thread but: no, it sounds kinda like they rerecorded it in an airplane hangar, i'm not too bugged by it but i do think it sounds markedly worse lol
Travis very clearly went for a maximalist and modern production style. And I really love it, actually.
Reposting from the main blink thread: Not sure if anyone is familiar with O (Otis Barthoulameu), but Mark / Fender donated a signature bass as part of some memorial auctions on ebay: Fender Mark Hoppus Signature Jaguar Bass autographed Hot Pink Blink 182 | eBay There's also items from Tony Hawk, Switchfoot and Thrasher Magazine. Maybe the best item is a lifetime pass for shows at the Casbah: | eBay
Tell me why in my head I’m singing Childhood’s: Remember when, we were young And we’d laugh, at everything As: Remember when, I was in The grocery store, now’s my time Love it.
Only weak point on this after multiple listens is Edging - and that mostly has to do with how warbley the pitch correction sounds, and less to do with the song itself. If that's really my only complaint, then I know I am going to love this for a long time.
