Well, yeah, but I think it's more likely now that they seem to have an established lineup that actually wants to work together.
the only reason I like enema or toypaj now is nostalgia. there's no way i'd like those albums if they released today, save maybe stay together for the kids.
In this case I understand not liking this record. But for someone who likes Enema or TOYPAJ independent of nostalgia, I'd be surprised if they didn't like this one too.
This is what I tell people that always claim Enema and Take Off were soooo great but California is very bad. They would hate Enema nowadays.
california being a bad album doesn't make a difference to the quality, or lack thereof, of enema or toypaj. im speaking from a purely personal point of view. not everyone shares my view, therefore they could enjoy enema/toypaj and not california. fwiw i think both enema and toypaj feature far better songwriting, irregardless of whether i would like them now. i also don't think the enjoyment of one certain sound makes a listener inherently like another album with a similar sound. liking one pop punk album doesn't mean you'll like another pop punk album. liking one death metal album doesn't mean you'll like another and so on, so I do see your view as flawed on some sense.
I agree with that generally, but I don't see enough to differentiate this album from those albums for that to be the case, unless you're a huge fan of Tom's vocals.
Of course they're different and Enema and Take Off are way better, but the mood those records create is very comparable.
True. Personally that's something I barely even notice, so I tend to discount that. I would say I enjoy this on the same level as Enema and TOYPAJ, don't love any of them but they're all good, catchy listens
enema is a lot more carefree and lackadaisical in it's approach to melody and songwriting, there's a charm in the approach of melding what they knew, with their newfound growing popularity. it's a very striking coming of age album that perfectly encapsulated it's scope. toypaj was more of a breakout, they took what they had in enema and expanded, rounding out their songwriting against their influences and took a step towards untitled, incorporating heavier and more deliberate melodies. this? this is not a step forward in song writing for where the three members are in their careers. this sounds a lot more like a bunch of 40 years olds trying to copy what they did 20 years ago and pasting over a feldmann sheen.
the sentimental part of my brain makes me like the new record. If blink-182 never existed and this was a brand new band i'd probably think it sounded like a fart.
10 songs would have been a lot stronger. My personal resequencing/fat-trimming gives it more of a thematic arc and some of the lyrics run into each other: 1. Cynical 2. Bored to Death 3. She's Out Her Mind 4. Kings of the Weekend 5. The Only Thing That Matters 6. Sober 7. Left Alone 8. No Future 9. San Diego 10. California
I didn't really come into this wanting anything specific, but this is basically exactly what I expected from the first record by the new lineup
Uh so you should be able to see why someone would like those albums and not this one if you admit those are way better albums
