It's interesting to me to see what stories get brought into the public conscious and take hold. The OMG John Feldmann made them rush meme is a big one on this album. The album was not rushed, and definitely not any more rushed then almost all of their albums and the process. If the band wanted to take more time on any of the songs, they could have. In a lot of cases — they did.

I'll say it again, but I don't think the use of sounds is "lazy" - I think it's a creative choice. The album is titled California, a state very well known for bringing that laid back surfer sound to the forefront ... a technique then also used by many of the 90's punk bands as well to beef up a live show and add crowd participation. The combination of Mark's love for The Beach Boys and the Descendents makes perfect sense here and I think the continual theme is carried throughout the album not out of laziness but because it's a musical choice. One that not only do I barely notice in context of the album, but actually think works really well to tie songs that may not have worked as well in the sequence, and felt out of place without them, together.

 

Random, but does anyone remember the Adio/Tom DeLonge shoe collab? I bought 2 pairs of them at the time, I thought I was the coolest fucking kid wearing them lol

 

But it couldn't have been ... like we know that now. We know Tom doesn't take advice or criticism, and he hasn't since around the TOYPAJ era. The stories of contention in the studio have been around for a long time. Jerry was able to break the tension, but now that Tom flat out doesn't wanna work with any outside producer, we know he simply can't be reigned in and ends up wanting to dominate all the musical choices (and vocals). Now that we've seen what happens when Mark can shine, and what Matt brings to the table, the idea of what "could have been" terrifies me because we wouldn't have gotten this. And letting Mark finally be Mark is the best thing to happen to Blink in 10+ years IMO.

 

Yeah, I mean I understand Mark and Travis' frustrations perfectly and I'm happy that they're happy with the current iteration of blink. But for me personally, I know I would have liked it more even if Tom still had nearly total control. I just prefer his songwriting and vocals. Hopefully some day Tom will learn to compromise and they can work as a unit again. Until then, I'm much happier to have blink around in this form than not at all.

 

Well, then isn't this the absolute best case for you? You can have just Tom right now! That's a thing that exists.

I appreciate it for what it is. I enjoy new AVA and I enjoy new blink. But I think Mark, Tom and Travis are just better together. And I know that's not possible atm, just wish things were different is all.

They should forget lyrics for the next album and just record 40 minutes of Na na and Whoas. (Heavily autotuned).

Brooks Wackerman would've been the safest bet at this point.

 

I would actually have really liked that outcome. Brooks is brilliant and I'm still horrified he left Bad Religion for Avenged Sevenfold.

"Left Alone" should really be the next single. It has the best chorus on the record. However, the right decisions are seldom made in these situations.

I played the record for some old school Blink fans whom also had former lives in the music business and "Left Alone" was their instant favorite.

That means nothing to no one but still.
