Making my way through this podcast - really interesting listen. Shocking to hear Tom name drop Bright Eyes about 13mins in - I've always wanted to know what blink thought about Conor and Vice Versa.

Just used Bright Eyes as an example of a band that was taking themselves more seriously than blink and Tom didn't really get it when blink was first coming up but has grown to appreciate all of those bands with time. It was very brief but I had to go back and re-listen when he said it. There is also a very funny story about Modest Mouse that Tom tells in this podcast.

Wish they’d repress California on vinyl. Dogs Eating Dogs too.

Whoa, I remember Mark said he'd only ever have those two tats on his wrist. Really cool to see.

Little late to this, but mine right now would be the following.

    Live - I Alone:
From kindergarten through most of early grade school, I would spend time with my dad making mixtapes of classic rock stuff I liked and for a while that was most of the music I knew well outside of top 40 radio. I would also borrow my sister’s tapes and CD’s. That is how I discovered Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Cranberries, Weezer, and the like was by hearing my sister play it and then borrow it. One day on summer vacation, I got her to make me a mixtape of her music for our vacation road trip and the first song was I Alone and I was immediately hooked. Live’s Throwing Copper became a staple of mine and made me want to find my own music like Third Eye Blind, Matchbox 20, and ultimately punk and hardcore.

    Rancid - Nihilism
When I think about getting into what I thought was “real punk” as a kid while being really into Blink, NFG, and Green Day, this Rancid record immediately jumps into my head. Realizing that I liked raw and gritty recordings after mostly being into big rock records for the most part was a game changer for me. This set me down the path of more DIY music and seeking out a local scene through some of my friends and a path I still consider myself on today.

    The Gaslight Anthem - Mae
While a big record for me when it was released, this record has taken on an additional meaning for me, as it’s my girlfriend’s favor gaslight record. This is her favorite song and it’s hard to not think of her when I hear it now. Prior to this relationship, this record always took me back to walking around Chicago visiting my sister and her husband while I was waiting to start a new job. My girlfriend and I now live in Chicago together and will be an 8 minute walk from their Chicago show in September. Funny how life works sometimes.

Polar Bear Club - My Best Days
While I live in Chicago now, I do have a ton of love for Cleveland where I lived most of my life. I miss my parents, my brother, and my friends there. This album was a staple for my brother and I. I wish I could hang with my brother more, but we are in different cities and have different work schedules. This song reminds me of late night beers and long road trips during the day.

    Have Heart - About Face
A lot of the hardcore in the early 2000’s that was getting talked about was heavier metalcore, but this band had that element of Minor Threat in having clear messages and the passion behind it to deliver it effectively. This band got me really digging deeper into modern hardcore at the time and give different bands another chance that didn’t click at first. I was also listening to a lot of the mainstream emo and pop punk stuff and this band helped ground me and balance my love for DIY music as well. Seeing Have Heart play outside to over 9k people a few years ago was one of the best feelings as a listener and show attendee.

Throwing Copper! Wow! I remember my mom buying this for me at Kmart and I had it on repeat as a kid. What an album. Gotta revisit it now.

One of my parents owned Throwing Copper and I never knew the music but always remembered the cover art. Weird stuff.

I could have easily added songs from them and the Lawrence Arms haha. Five songs is hard to cover everything. I could have added classic rock or metal too. Hell, I didn’t even touch on ska or hip hop. I think my five songs would change depending on the day I was asked for sure.

Haha if anything the art is memorable.

I would contend that this record was just a touch too early. If it came out in 1995 or 1996 it would have been bigger. Even still, it had a slew of really good singles. Good example of timing in the music industry working against you compared to like Blink’s Enema of the State being the perfect timing.

arguably they screwed it up by following it up with a single called "lakini's juice" just sayin

Fair and that’s why I mentioned it by saying the singles were still big. I just think if the singles weren’t competing against some of the grunge singles that they might have climbed even higher. Feel like they more with the poppier alternative sound that came in a year so later. I was always surprised the record came out in 1994.

Couple of days after the Toronto date of that tour I went to. Would have been cool to see, but 12 year old me was very happy I got to see Travis drum

Always weird seeing them perform WMAA without Tom both messing up and not singing backing vocals.
