I really, really wish I could get into the full +44 album like all of you can. There's only really a select few songs from that album that I listen to

I really like a couple +44 songs, but that album is pretty rough.

“The past is only the future with the lights on” might be Mark’s worst lyric

Not really sure why that lyric would be considered anything other than perfectly fine/average

Respect to the lovers, but it’s a hokey, pseudo thoughtful sentiment.

Mark’s a great lyricist sometimes, that record is a huge miss fer me tho

A cliche like “hindsight is 20/20” is successful because “20/20 eyesight” is a thing, so the wordplay is amusing and emphasizes the meaning

The future isn’t the present with the lights off, it’s just kind of a contrived expression is all

  14. It’s literally Marks favorite lyric he’s ever written.
To me, it means: life is cyclical. People and situations change and come back again, and your experiences in the past give you foresight into the future before you. You can choose to change or break the cycle, or choose to let it happen again. That’s what I interpret that line to mean.

(Also his interpreration makes no sense; the past being the future with the lights is a linear image, unlit future constantly illuminating. If life is cyclical, what does breaking that cycle mean? Is life cyclical or not?)

It’s cool that the present is the speed of light tho

  17. He doesn’t mean literally a circle, he means situations in your life are similar to ones you’ve seen before. And you have the choice to learn or change based on what you’ve experienced before.

At any rate, i dont wanna be a buzzkill. I’m glad people like it. life goes on, maybe a cycle, maybe a line

Dorkiest blink lyric is "life is too short to last long" but the song is good so

    “Degenerate” may seem childish, but we’re probing at some deep cultural neuroses here;

“Crossed the street, naked at night”
    - This is westward expansion, this is a doe-eyed Lewis And Clark crossing the Mississippi

“Pulled out some beer, and gulped it down
Nude in a gutter is how I was found”
    - Manifest destiny, drunk on itself

“Thrown in the police car and the door slammed
No noise, just silence, as I screamed, my dick was jammed
Now in prison for one month, no one to see
All I got is this guy Ben Dover”
    - He’s tackling police brutality, Ben Dover IS the corrupt incarceral system

“Dad got nude, wore a thong
For a hobby I make bombs”
    - This is a comment on the experiential distortions of toxic masculinity

Altogether, just a powerful, powerful song

I read an interview with Feldy during the California album release and he said he thinks it’s a sexual reference.
