Mark’s backing vox are the secretest of secret weapons in the blink arsenal. They’re most of how my rankings set up in the tossups.

Do you think first and only day because Mark and Travis will just kick him out after one day if he pulls a diva stuff. Just kidding…kind of.

  3. Tom would just leave the band again, like he'll do if he ever rejoins Blink full time again.

I kind of feel the same way. Release the new album and do a single with Tom (on the album or not and see how it goes. Both bands have good things going so don’t force and old situation to work if it can’t or won’t, or get creative on how to work around it (like Bad Religion and Mr. Brett).

Honestly, I would have said Tom in a songwriter setting with Feldy would be horrible, but that Illium song is pretty awesome. To me, it is the best example of Tom in that kind of setting.

I stand by putting them in a house with no producer for 3 months and see what happens. I highly doubt that would happen but I think it would bring the best music. I would also be fine with a Frankenstein album like neighborhoods/Dogs Eating Dogs again where it is painfully obvious who had the original idea for each song but they still trade plenty of verses.

I would prefer that they have a run of 2-3 albums with Tom and significantly less touring/obligations together. If they had time to dust the cobwebs off and find a real balance I think they could reach untitled level creativity again. I don't imagine that would happen, but it would be pretty awesome.

Untitled wasn’t that creative from my standpoint. It was really built off Boxcar Racer. 2/3’a of the same band and same producer. Plus it featured Mark on a song.

It was a different process for Blink. Yes. Not that different from what they did before though. And I still find Untitled a little lyrically repetitive. It was bold for a pop punk band though.

Untitled totally was heavily influenced by Boxcar Racer. It doesn't make untitled any less special or progressive to me. Ben Gibbard talks a lot about how Transatlantacism and Give Up came out in the same year and how he can't imagine ever having that much creative output happening in such a short amount of time again. I see that whole era of all of the Blink members being relentlessly creative. From Boxcar Racer through the first AVA and +44. Untitled sticks out as the best of the batch for me personally. All of it rules, but Untitled was a pretty wild feat for those three artists to do together IMO.

It’s an opinion. It’s mine. I said it several times before.

Other bands like face to face took even bigger leaps doing Ignorance Is Bliss and we’re more creative as a punk band before that album.

So good on Blink for getting Blink out of the safe zone, but I’m not going to ignore the very direct connection to Boxcar.

Im crediting the progressive nature to Boxcar Racer. It gave them the confidence to do Untitled. As a band, I give them credit for not just trying to make Enema 3.

I don’t hold Untitled in the same regard as others do. Totally fine. Different opinions.

As someone who’s not an AvA fan, I love the fact fact that the progress in albums lead to +44 and the impact that record hd on parts of Nine.

I like Untitled, (and it has some great songs). I just view it differently.

  12. BCR was definitely the perfect bridge between TOYPAJ and Untitled. But I also think Untitled is more "creative" than BCR.

  13. I'm tired of Blink catering to Tom's one foot in/one foot out personality. I hope they play some shows with Tom again someday, but I'll actually be bummed if Tom were to ever rejoin the band full time. In the moment, it would be fun and interesting. But in the big picture, it will end again (for the third time? fourth? i've lost count how many times he's left the band) and we will just be back here again soon after having these same coversations yet again.

Mark's "It's like the universe has left me without a place to go" on Ghost on the Dancefloor takes me to another plane of existence.

Maybe it was more “creative” and having Mark in there is probably the big reason why. Adds the band back together and they took their time working on it. The big leap was in what BCR was from Blink. I wish Jerry did what ended up being Neighbourhoods.

It's clearly more creative than Boxcar. No quotations needed lol.

  17. Box Car Racer is drop D Blink and extremely basic. Good album. But straight forward, on purpose!

  18. TOYPAJ to BCR wasn't thaaaat big of a leap. There were hints of BCR-ness on songs like "Please Take Me Home", "Stay Together For The Kids", "What Went Wrong", etc. The biggest differences in BCR compared to Blink were Travis' more creative drum loops and using different kits in the same song, and then the really quiet to really loud dynamics in some of the songs productions.

Do you feel Untitled was a big leap then? You pointed out good examples of that sound creeping in and really some of those songs are some that I love. Jerry gets a lot of credit, but maybe he deserves even more for pushing them.

    Maybe Untitled was inevitable.

Yeah sounds like we both love this era but lean towards different preferences within it. I love it all. Would be curious to see what they come up with in this modern era as they have all meandered all over the place creatively. Really when I talk about Untitled I mostly am referencing them being in the room together creatively contributing the best they have to offer individually and collaboratively. That is what I really want to hear.

Count me in on the camp that doesn’t think just because Mark beat cancer means his lyrics will be darker. The guy could just be happy he’s alive and write about things that he appreciates more now.

I agree. And he wrote songs like Home Is Such A Lonely Place and he seems really self aware to begin with, so I feel like he’ll continue to write about different things, even if he does chose to tackle the subject matter at some point.

I dont know why people keep using the word 'darker.' But if anything his lyrics will probably be more introspective.

He’s wrote some really introspective stuff though. I tend to like those songs, so I’d be fine with even more of that if he chooses to go there.
