I finished the book yesterday! Some randmom thoughts…
Some people are saying that Mark gives Tom a lot of shit (true) but also gives him credit for pushing him and the band forward all the time. Not creatively, but litterally getting things done.

The BCR stuff was so sad.

As someone said before the AVA part was kind of brutal. There was a line “he overpromissed and underdelievered” or something like that that made me feel bad for Tom, because he put so much effort into it but Mark kind of nails it in such a simple way.

It is so sad to see that almost everything that happened is just bad communication among young people overwhelmed by complicated situations.

I think the fact the he talks only a couple of pages about Nine and the pop thing kind of tells that he was not a 100% into it. He doesn’t mention all the collaborations either.

I think/hope the part about OMT is short because there is a documentary comming. (A man can dream)
I loved it. Mark is such a nice guy that has been through a lot of shit. It really makes you understand him better as a human being.

Sometimes I think about Tom posting about AvA on the old AP. Wild times

Some thoughts on the book as well (I don't think this spoils anything so not using tags):

    - As someone who is now in my 40's it is absolutely wild that their first drummer (Scott) was so young and thrown in those situations. Dude was a full blown alcoholic before he was even legal drinking age which, while I guess is no longer that are, you combine that with being constantly thrown in party situations and people kissing your ass in the Dude Ranch early era, recipe for disaster
    - Mark and the whole band will obviously forever miss working with Jerry Finn
    - The Green Day chapter is definitely the most interesting to me as I put them on the same level that most of you obsess over Blink. I've always known GD to be quietly (or maybe not so quietly in the 90's) competitive so their behavior isn't entirely surprising but a little bit of a disappointment given the Gilman scene they were birthed out of.
    - +44 years sound particularly miserable, I should listen to that album again
    - As many of said the first reunion was definitely weird vibes. As I've said before, a lot of of people were expecting the good time/funny/feel-good Blink 182 to be back not realizing that all 3 had gone through some serious shit, had unresolved issues which thus drove them to an even darker direction with Neighborhoods which had a mixed reception
    - Tom Delonge seems like a frustrating guy to work with but it's worth it as he seems to push the band forward more often than not while Mark keeps them grounded in accessibility

Overall, was a nice peak behind the curtains though as many have pointed out, I do wish the later years had more coverage. I

(Sorry, I know replying to you defeats the purpose of the spoiler haha) I think maybe Nine, the collabs, Simple Creatures, etc. were just sort of too recent for him to really reflect back on with much significance yet. It also got quickly overshadowed by COVID and his diagnosis as well.

Even though these guys have shared plenty and been open and vulnerable, there are still a few things that I'd like to hear about that I doubt they'll ever see a point in discussing. Number one is what was going on with blink before Mark's diagnosis. Matt seemed to be completely out of the loop with the band and seemed to indicate that a whole album was complete, but then Mark said "We haven't even started on the new blink record yet", completely denying said album's existence lol.

I always wondered why +44 didn't get more music videos but it makes sense now lol

The Green Day stuff made me start listening to International Superhits and while I do love AI, I significantly love everything pre-AI more

I think even Tom would be grounded enough now to say the early AVA days were definitely a case of overpromise/underdeliver.

He was a 30 year old dude trying to reinvent himself not only personally, but to the outside world as well. Add in the pressure of coming off of blink's Untitled era, plus his back problems. I know he says the pills made him say stupid shit, but I think his ego and need to prove was the main driver there...the pills certainly wouldn't have helped though.

During the first blink reunion, he was always posting about AVA, making sure fans knew that band was still active, working, doing shit. During that time, blink was his secondary band, not Angels.

Now, he acknowledges that AVA was built at a time in his life when he was looking for light in a shitstorm. He said so in Zane's interview, and on Toby's podcast the other week he even said he's not sure when/if we'll get new Angels music/a tour.

Obviously it sucks if Mark is outwardly mean towards Tom/Angels, but I don't think that's the intention, and even 2025 Tom would acknowledge how in the clouds he was during those hard times, letting ego and the breakdowns in his personal life get in the way.

    Yes, it's me

My memory of that time was that Tom was just really really excited about that first AvA album, and while it wasn't some reinvention of the art of music or whatever I still really love that album. In fact I think that AvA, as a project, hit more than it missed.

I’m about 3/4ths of the way through Mark’s book and have some thoughts/questions (ramblings likely):

I was happy to hear a truthful recollection of how Box Car went down. We had heard stories and “oh it’s fine” but I’m truly happy Mark gave us his perspective.

Overall, this has been truly helpful seeing the overall timeline of the blink universe. I had remembered the Green Day tour, but did not know that led them up to releasing American Idiot.

Untitled’s recording process. I could watch the Cheetah vids, the MTV release doc, the leaked Untitled doc over and over and over again and still be enthralled with this one chapter focusing on it. It sounds like Tom really hated the experience, but I reallllly think they need to emulate something like that again in a future effort. Locking themselves away gave us their best album and even if they did it for just an EP’s worth of stuff, I think we could get some really cool stuff.

They went to 7 different engineers for mixing?! So you’re telling me that my favorite album of all time has possibly 7 different sonic iterations? And we’ll likely never get to hear any of the others? That is something that will keep me up at night. Shows that they really wanted to nail it and they truly did.

M Night Shamalan’s I Miss You video: are there any rumors out there of what the video was going to be?

The drunk Tom x Mel Gibson interview: does that exist somewhere? (I could Google this on my own I know)

The Robert Smith story. Beyond the “he almost kissed me” thing, is there any full footage of those shows where he sings with the band? I’ve seen videos of that specific song with Robert singing with blink, but is there any FULL show footage?

I’m currently in the +44 part of the book and you can really tell how hard this was on Mark. The whole breakup, the AVA “this will change the world”, the downsizing of his “fam” from selling out MSG to opening for FOB. Even the photos of that era you can see it had taken a toll on him. I really like the honesty in this even if it’s not as deep in some parts as we’d want it to be.

Lastly, I wish I could hear Tom’s reaction to reading it and if he agrees with his portrayal within it. I’m truly savoring the book for as long as I can. It’s been a great itch-scratcher during a more quiet time for the band.

He did over promise & under deliver though. It would be one thing if he was like “I’m really excited about it. It’s a new territory for me & I think it’s really good.” Instead he claimed that the music was going to change the world, that nobody had ever done this before, that this was bigger than blink, that this would be the biggest thing to happen to rock music since U2.

& then it was just what he always did with reverb, delay, digital elements, and different lyrical themes. He even says so in his interview with Toby.

& I love that record. I loved it when it came out, but even then at 18 years old I was like “well this isnt what he said it was.”

Yes I remember recording the Tom interview with Mel Gibson from MTV, it was promoting the movie Signs. I remember Mel Gibson made a herpes joke where he said “what’s the difference between true love and herpes? Herpes lasts forever” and I believe Tom and Mel put on tin foil hats. No clue if it’s on Youtube but it was definitely shown on MTV. I didn’t know he was drunk doing the interview but I was 17ish at the time.
