I must've watched this 50 times in high school. Recording documentaries are a beautiful thing.

Man, went down Blink memory lane last night as I was cleaning out a stack of magazines. Had like 12 years straight of Alt Press magazine from 2004 through 2016. So crazy looking back through the articles post self-titled, through break-up/+44/AVA era, through the "we're back", 2 years in a row of "most anticipated new release", Neighborhoods drop, break up again.

I think it was that Mark just wanted to make another album similar to EOTS/TOYPAJ. The Untitled album was a huge risk for them as they really didn't have that normal blink-182 summer poppy song except making Feeling This on the album and I Miss You and possibly Always were the other other "radio friendly" songs that had. I think having a full album of heavier guitar sounds and dark lyrics was the issue more than having a song or two on the album that was dark. Everything they did during the recording process was completely different from what they had done in the past so I can see how it would make Mark uncomfortable at first, as Tom and Travis had already done music like this with BCR.

Even though Mark had written darker songs in the past it still doesn't mean he was comfortable with it. When he wrote Adam's Song, for example, he was very unsure he should even show Tom the song and they placed it purposely between a jokey song in Dysentery Gary and ATST because of the lyrics/tone were kind of out of place with the rest of the album's content.

Blink's issues started before the Pop Disaster Tour and way before American Idiot came out. I don't think Green Day had anything to do with blink's problems. Box Car Racer, Tom's ego, Mark's paranoia, Travis branching out and getting famous and them getting older and having families now led to 1st break up.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

all true, although I'd argue Mark's lyrics around that time were moving that way anyway. They're not as blatant as Adam's Song of course, but Don't Leave Me and Going Away are both fairly downbeat. Follow that through to TOYPAJ where he has exactly one jokey/happy song surrounded by some pretty dark stuff, Shut Up and Everytime especially.

I guess it's just interesting to me that Mark was so adept at the darker lyrics while being such a major voice for the band staying poppy and simple, meanwhile Tom struggled with deeper lyrics but was the main one pushing the band further into that musical territory. Part of what the original Blink one so fascinating, that chemistry, I think.

    LMAO

Oh it's definitely possible Mark was moving in that direction but I don't think without BCR we would have gotten the Untitled album. Even Mark's "darker" songs were poppy and while the subject matter of Going Away, for example, was a bummer it still had the upbeat/happy/poppy sound to it. Adam's Song felt like such a big song because of the chorus. Mark could write a break up song and make it sound happy and fun. Don't get me wrong Mark definitely could write a dark song too and that +44 album is a perfect example of that. I think that might be one of the reasons why I don't love Neighborhoods as a whole because I felt it was dark for the sake of it being dark (kind of like some comic book movies) and what they thought a follow up album to Untitled should sound like. It felt forced, especially from Mark's side. I just don't think he was comfortable with the way Neighborhoods was shaping up and was having trouble writing. I think the lack of Mark only songs kind of enforce that. When Mark gets out of his comfortable zone he seems to take a back seat which is probably the reason why the blink albums after TOYPAJ turned more Tom centric until Tom left and we got California which was a blink throwback album.

I think Tom just changed his musical style and no longer wanted to write fun songs and wanted things to be heavier and darker which reflected what he was going through at the time and what music he was listening to. I think after the Untitled album it changed again and that's why he tried to turn into Bono with AVA and is still kind of in that phrase.

Anyone else remember the Green Day interview either during or after the Pop Disaster tour? They talked about how blink constantly kept apart and had their own buses and did their own thing. I think they even said Tom was the most that way, if I recall correctly.

Things had already started to fall apart during that time.

FUCKIN SAVAGES IN THAT FUCKIN BOX Prestigious

I almost mentioned that the other day. I remember hearing he would pass notes from the bus or something? The video of Mark and Billie Joe talking after a show is still one of the most awkward exchanges I've seen lol

This is just crazy enough to sound like it came from Tom.

  17. fuck thats actually pretty genius.

as an aside, I used to email back and forth with Chris Georggin and he told me during untitled sessions they wanted to use a line from Back to the Future at the beginning of Feeling This but couldn't get it cleared. Today, I finally made that version. Enjoy.

  18. I would take it with a grain of salt because I asked Dave Carlock about it a couple years ago and he was never privy to it. Still sounds rad to me.

Listening to California for the first time in probably a year. A lot of appreciation for it, seeing as it is 'technically' my favourite band, and there's some great songs on it. But yeah, I just miss Tom. The band had so much more dynamism with him in it, even during the reunion years.

    Things have changed.

They all have their own buses now. They don’t stay in the same hotels sometimes. That, to me, isn’t a big deal.

When you're 26+, sharing a bus with two other dudes for a few months sounds like hell. I get them wanting to stay separate, especially if girlfriends/wives were with them for parts of the tour.

Yeah, by that point they were all married and probably had children on the way. If you’ve got the means to travel like that, knock yourself out.
