This articulates perfectly what I want out of new Blink. California was a fun reintroduction, but let's take it somewhere else lyrically this time. I know both Matt and Mark have it in them too.

Oh you mean the guy that doesn't want to be back but will remind everyone every few months that he can come back anytime he wants while he's just dropping the blink 182 name to get people to invest in his company that will never get a return on their investment? That Tom?

I think that's a big part of it (and the record sounds so good), but I've always thought a lot of it came from the little tweaks they did in the actual songwriting and even just layering elements they had already been using in the past.

Like ending "Feeling This" with a larger version of the chorus and dropping everything except a layered vocal harmony, the dropped tuning of "Obvious", working from a simple, stripped down loop for "I Miss You", having "Easy Target" and "All of This" being essentially the same song instrumentally, hardly having any songs follow a standard three-chorus structure, etc.

They weren't the most complicated things to attempt, but it drastically helped them achieve some sonic variety from song to song.

Exactly, and considering blinks past records, it was definitely new and experimental, FOR THEM. That record took forever to create though, and with the house and all that, I'm sure was expensive. These days it makes sense to know what you want when you get into the studio, knock the songs out, and try to keep that cost low.

  7. I know Blink will never be “experimental” but it would be nice to see them push themselves a bit more.

I am very confident they have at least one more borderline great album in them.

I think if they take their time and try not to stay in the box they could be great. The +44 album is fairly safe but there are little flourishes that make a world of difference.

Yep, and I know for California, it was probably nice for them to forget all of that and just try to go back to the basics, but I think I've had my fill of that. haha.

I liked that we got that many Blink songs at once, but It also would've been cool to release like a 11/12 song LP and the rest split up into 7" EP's or something. Put songs like LA, Sober, San Diego, Left Alone, BTD, HISALP, and Cynical (Some DLX songs too) on the LP and the faster/poppier stuff like KOTW, OTTM, and SOOHM on 7" releases. I think it would be cool to collect haha.

I only say this because one of my favorite 7"s I own is They Came To Conquer Uranus. Plus, 7" vinyl are cool.

Blink should do a 7" split with Alkaline Trio doing covers. Have Mark sing an Alk3 song and then have Dan sing a Blink song.

Than Matt sing a Dan song with Blink. I'd chuckle at that.

I suspect that the California recordings were biased in favour of Mark due to a mixture of Matt's lack of confidence and a desire to reassure fans that it was still Blink (Zebrahead did the same thing when they kicked out their original singer).

I think it’s more that there were a lot of fans that were outcrying for Tom, and that they needed to show that this was still blink-182. Also, have to imagine how weird it was for Matt to come in to a band like this Of this size, he probably was a bit overwhelmed. I don’t feel Matt lacked confidence, nor do I buy that Matt didn’t have a role in the writing process. Again, there were a lot of ‘omg no tom no blink” fans that probably made Matt want to keep his head down for the first Go around, which is a shame because Matt is a very nice guy and talented artist.
