Circling back to the conversation from earlier, I like Matt’s contributions, but he barely seems to be a part of blink. He seems to rarely post about blink and is barely interviewed. I get that Mark and Travis are the faces at this point, but still. I wouldn’t be surprised if 90% of what he sings and plays in the studio was already written for him.

Sorry for the late response, but I would say a couple things happened with hair metal specifically, but the tenets of that take on pop music is still around.

For starters, I think some of the big hair metal songs have gotten scooped up into classic rock at this point. Think Def Lepp, Poison, GNR, Skid Row, Warrant, etc. Heck, Bon Jovinfrom that time period too. I would also point out that a lot of the poppy screamo/metalcore of the aughts and tens was pulling a lot from hair metal. Bands like Escape the Fate and Black Veil Brides come to mind. So the resurgence did kind of happen. It just never broke as big again, but the singer from Poison still got a tv show and whatnot.

And lastly, not that hip hop was pulling from hair metal, but a lot of the surface of that genre has replaced the party and treat women like objects vibe (obviously not all hip hop) that hair metal projected. The idea of having song writing teams write catchy songs, and then party your ass off and and lead with that is still very much going on in pop music and always has. It is just a different presentation, so in that sense the spirit of hair metal is still there.

I ran in to Tom once at a science museum in St. Louis a couple years ago. I was a bit starstruck and was following him around for a bit. He must have noticed me pointing at him to my wife because he came up to me and introduced himself. I asked him how he was doing. He said “never better.” I then asked about blink. I kid you not, he then went on a twelve minute rant about how he and Travis talk to each other 6x a day and that blink always has been and always will be his band and that what Matt was doing was notable but isn’t really blink-blink but a new era of the band that needed to happen and that ava has the power to heal the blind and cause the lame to walk and that despite what people say “I time bomb” is grammatically correct. We then went on our separate ways, but not before he showed me a picture of his new pet iguana.

    Wild shit.

I saw Tom at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

  10. I met Tom at Warped Tour once when AVA was on. There was a meet and greet line only for Modlife members, and then a separate line if you wanted to buy merch. I walked right up to the merch section, Tom was sitting right there, and I asked him what shirt I should buy, he picked one out for me, and I bought it, and went on my way. So while everyone had to pay up the nose for Modlife, I got to just walk right up and meet him and have him pick out a shirt for me, haha.

  13. I've met Tom and Travis twice and Mark once. One of the times I met Travis was in the wild at his restaurant in LA and I drunkenly asked him to pull up a chair to sit with me and my brother, but thankfully he declined and then sat with his buddies in the back, haha. But then Travis came up to me later on into my meal and asked if I was liking the food and told me to get the chocolate bread pudding because "it's stupid how good it is." So obviously I ordered that too, haha.

Travis - Travis was on tour with the Transplants in 2013 and at my local venue, there's a nice little parking lot you can hang out at and see the talent walk it. Got to watch his bus roll up and he piled out with his family. He signed my untitled vinyl record. After Transplants finished, I left early before Rancid came on and he came out around back and I got to talk to him for a good 10 mins about blink and everything. It was before they announced the Untitled anniversary shows, so he was hiding that but said they were recording new music (turned out to be Dogs Eating Dogs). At the very end of our discussion I said "well thanks for uh... meeting me!" So awkward but he was super nice.

Mark - met him at the Untitled anniversary shows in LA later in 2013. I flew from DC, landed around noon, waited around back of the venue for about 4 hours. Talked to the security guy for a long time who ended up getting a call on his radio about a "he's in a black prius approaching". Turned out to be Mark and he pulled into the driveway about to head down. He was in the passenger seat and the window of the driver side was open and I said "Mark! Is it possible to meet some of us?!" and he hesitated, then opened the door and came out. He signed my untitled vinyl.

Enema anniversary shows I bought VIP and was hoping to get something signed. My 2009 big tour bunny had a broken ear, so I brought that with me and asked Mark politely if they'd sign it. He got Travis and Matt to sign it as well. Epic time.

Tom - Finally met him at the most recent AVA tour with VIP and I brought my untitled vinyl and broken bunny ear. It was such a journey to get those last two things signed, but probably both my most prized possessions.

I've only met Mark and that was the time in 2000 Will from Fenix TX let me and my friend hang out backstage for an hour and a half. Still crazy to me how nice Mark was to me after I literally ran up and interrupted him and Skye walking around. You could hear Tom and Travis doing a soundcheck

Met Matt (and Trio) when they were signing Agony before a show with Rise Against

Can't believe so many of you people have meet them all! I've been a fan since like '99 but the most interaction I've ever had with any of them was the time last year when Mark read my advice for Fall Guys out loud on Twitch and said, "Thanks for that."

    Whilst we’re sharing stories…

I met Mark and Travis after a +44 show in 2007.

Mark came out of the venue first and I was at the front of the line to greet him. Totally starstruck, I rambled about how much his music meant to me and asked him if he’d sign my ticket stub. He agreed and thanked me for listening all these years. I then realised I didn’t have a pen handy, and sheepishly asked if he happened to have one. Mark excitedly exclaimed he’s always prepared and pulled a pen from his pocket like he was performing a magic trick.

Travis came out a short while later and I again thanked him for the music. He was so appreciative and chill, and just kept saying “That’s awesome. Thank you so much.”

Lil’ Chris, who was tragically killed in the 2008 plane crash, was there too, chatting with fans and giving away Famous stickers and patches. Real sweet guy.

Never had the opportunity to meet Tom, but he’s the one I’d be the most nervous about. Tom’s the reason I picked up a guitar at age 11.

I met Travis back in 2011 when he performed a drum set at IU opening for Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. We convinced our parents to let us skip school and drive up to crash with some other friends. I was going through the hallway and saw he had a meet and greet. Instantly dropped the $25 dollars to do it.

I met Tom that same year at the Honda Civic tour. He was cracking jokes and was very welcoming. I had idolized him since I was a kid so it was awesome to have him be just like I imagined lol. I got a duplicate print of one of his paintings and he signed it to me. It's currently framed in a waterproof/fireproof frame. I don't listen to Blink like I used to, but that is probably my most prized possession

No one understands how tall Tom is until he is not on stage and about 10 feet away from you.
