  1. Ugh. Look. My meaning wasn’t to say it was okay but okay. Talk down to me and make me feel dumb. That’ll change my mind. Good look

I’ve been really fascinated by the conversation around Matt Skiba these past few months because it feels like people all at once just discovered who Matt Skiba is. Several of the Alkaline Trio’s biggest songs are just detailed stories of violence against women, or killing innocent people in general. And his whole Church of Satan thing was equal parts something he was interested in, and just trying to upset people as an elaborate troll job. By his own admission, he does things just to piss people off, because he enjoys it.

Everything he’s done and been criticized for in 2017-2020 is right in line with everything he did from 2000-2016. This is who he is. There’s no point in defending it, because he doesn’t defend it himself. But I’m also not sure why anyone expected anything else, given everything he showed us the last two decades. This just is who the guy is.

What blink song (or songs) do you guys think has the best drum work from Travis (sorry Scott stans lol)?

Yea, what you said was as long as some people are indifferent about it; it’s all good for them to jam blink mindlessly like fools. And anyone who is negatively influenced, well, who cares? I just want to jam shitty pop punk songs.

certainly a post worthy of respect. No matter what I say, I can’t make you care about other people. Shitty takes need called out.

pretty sure Nathan tried to start a constructive convo and the only part you engaged with was the part about shrugging it off lol

    Nowhere. I’m just some jackass.

I’d like to believe that in 2020 where the information of the world is at our fingertips to learn and understand other people and history to see how things affect and influence people, so that the world view they put forth is more than passive indifference.

    but here we are.

Edit: I worded the phrasing poorly, but I’m just gonna leave it as is.

  11. So wait how am I supposed to respond to it? There’s a rule book? I didn’t disagree with anything he said? It was a good valuable post. Is this acknowledgment enough? Did @Nathan feel slighted by my response?

But I need to listen to the song about Mark jerking off without feeling bad about it in any way.

  13. And you’re not wrong. And your choice to stop listening and supporting blink isn’t wrong but neither is mine to continue to listen to their songs. I can be critical of the band yet also be interested in their output. Maybe in 2004 I’d have looked into those books but to me personally, Matt is Matt. I’ve only been familiar with him on this level since 2015 but everything seems to be on brand with what I’d already heard. So to me personally, it’s just been white noise. Without people pointing out every thing I wouldn’t know what to even think about the info. Do I think it’s dumb, yeah. Am I smart enough to not follow it blindly? Yeah. And why is that wrong?

I may be speaking for myself but there’s a subset of folks on this site, and I’m too lazy to say who but they dip in and out of here usually to stir the pot, that unless I’m with you, I’m somehow against you and that’s just not true.

Forgot how good he is in violence. Should add always to that too.

Separate but related...his drumming on several live songs probably beat out his recorded tracks. The end of I miss you is other worldly.

Why is it wrong to mindlessly support music by shitty people? Again, I don’t know how to make someone care about other people. I can’t do it. I can’t change your heart.

you don’t care about what Matt is doing. Fine. The points of why it is problematic have been made incredibly clear. So what does passive indifference contribute to anything? Why chime in when it is clear people here are bothered by it to various degrees? All it does is belittle the people that do care and are hurt by his actions.

Violence against women will be such a stain against women, early to mid 2000s was so bad in retrospect.

Being in high school at the time, the stuff from brand new and taking back Sunday left such bad influences on my generation.

Idk I never got Neo-Nazi vibes listening to Goddamnit lol or when they pretended to be vampires or whatever corny shit Alk3 got into. This is different

Not sure if it's truly about heart...a lot of people grew up separating art from artist. I don't think that that is inherently wrong but it's definitely a gray area.

Unfortunately it has a lot to do with taste. A lot of people can stop listening to blink because it's not their thing anymore...and it turns out their band members do things they don't like. You see this in any genre of music. Easier to do when the art isn't compelling to you anymore.

  19. I don’t think anyone knows the right answer. I think it’s unfair to pretend blink is the only band I listen to either. It’s not fair to paint it so black and white. That’s not even a conversation anymore.

are you saying the music is different? Don't think they're putting Nazi themes into new blink...?

  22. This is said better than I could say. I’m not great with words. I know I don’t like being spoken down to or told I’m a bad person. I know I’m not.

I hate the black and white attitude of cancel culture because it's selectively applied. Essentially if the person or art or whatever is from a place of privilege, must apply absolute rules to it...if it's for a marginalized group the rules are different. I don't know if that is the best way to approach society and cultural issues.

No they aren’t putting enough effort into the band to be anywhere near that controversial
