It could have been on Neighborhoods except it’s too good for that.

I hear that comparison in the verses, but the transition into the chorus reminds me of a different band entirely.

  3. But you guys. BLACK. RAIN. Those cymbal grabs/ pauses are so fucking good. This song rules.

    Ronstile.

Neighborhoods and California are getting shade thrown. I love those records, see them as crucial to the blink legacy, but also recognize they aren't Blink's strongest releases. I would put them in a category together of Blink finding their footing again, and Nine is a new era entirely. So rad to see.

The one thing that strikes me as odd about Mark's lyricism is that he seems to be making a bunch of weird, rapper-style flexes lately

He sings about "Sleeping with her friends, taking all the meds" on the The First Time & in Wildfire from Cali Deluxe he sung "Pop another xanax, cheating on your girlfriend" which all sound weird in a dorky rock song.

Meanwhile in their older songs there were lines about how much trouble Tom had getting laid ('Anthem') and they'd rarely ever mention alcohol, let alone actual "drugs".

Is Mark just older now and singing about his experiences as a 20-something in blink? Or is he trying to utilize lyrical elements from pop/hip-hop?

reminds me of Fallen Interlude straight up, then the outro gives me vibes of the drum outros of some Neighborhood songs like Kaleidoscope or Snake Charmer. really digging this song now!

I've said it multiple times recently so I won't reiterate it, but basically those albums just had problems from the get-go (whereas Nine had much better footing as you said). Lack of collaboration and then trying to incorporate a new member are big ones, but they still have some of my favorite songs from blink's whole collection weaved in there.

It's still crazy to think that after +44's only album, we hardly got any music from Mark until California. He largely took a backseat on Neighborhoods and DED, so it feels great getting these two albums where he is in literally every song and then the Simple Creatures EPs.

He’s joking because the last umpteen pages have been people saying tht the singles didn’t do this album justice

But I’m saying I think the singles are completely forgettable trash, whereas most people seem to at least like them.

Simple Creatures has a song called Drug.

I think drug references in this generation are different than 10 years ago, and decades before it. Don’t forget Matt is in the band and contributes to lyrics.

I did not like them at all. Darkside was ok. But I enjoyed the album and think it's better than California. If that helps.

It will always floor me that Fountains of Wayne (I think that's the band name) wrote "That Thing You Do" and other songs for the movie.

I don't thiiiiink Adam Schlesinger wrote anything else for That Thing You Do besides the title song, but he has written an awful lot of music for TV and film:

I have officially caved. Saving No Heart To Speak Of through the end for later to absorb the few new ones but First Time and Grenade are great. Black Rain and Heaven make me straight up grin.
