This is a great EP but just an eh album.

What a letdown. It seems like a collection of ideas rather than a full fledged album. Loved the past two because it felt big and cohesive. This is just so all over the place. Almost wish it was put out as singles and B sides because maybe it would have worked then. I mean clearly the guy has a lot going on and I’m sure this album means a lot to him. It just doesn’t hit for me. I also was hoping for something like The River with the way he spoke on the themes of being on the edge and the whole NY/NJ thing. Just didn’t get any of it. I still want to see a live show at some point because the singles will be bangers live.

Just got around to listening to this… found it pretty decent. Not bad… some solid Bleachers moments.

Not my favorite album, no, and it’s not Strange Desire, but it’s quite alright!

Jack producing Bruce is absolutely on a list of things that could happen. Wild to think about, but sometimes the simulation breaks like that.

  6. I turned the Apple Music Dolby Atmos back on to see what this thing sounded like and I was shocked at how bad it was. In general I find the implementation of that feature has been awful.

  7. The Atmos mix is the 'good' mix. The change was adding those.

Been a while since I’ve been this disappointed in something I was so excited for

Three songs in, didn’t really like gone now and rarely return to strange desire, but I’m enjoying this

I'm really curious which version I'm even listening to... I'm pretty sure it's the 'bad' mix because it's been available on Amazon Music since the release time and hasn't changed at all since then, but it honestly doesn't sound that bad to me. I can't picture Jason saying the one I'm listening to sounds like it was recorded underwater.

There's an album from a few years ago by the frontman of one of my favorite bands My Morning Jacket, Jim James. The album is Uniform Distortion. Some of the songs are pretty good, or would be, but they honest to God sound like they were recorded with him standing across the room from the microphone and then you laid a really heavy, soaking wet blanket over the microphone. I can't figure out what the fuck him or anyone involved was thinking.

Long story short, I don't think this sounds nearly as bad as that, but it sounds like a lot of people do.

Man this is really lean huh? It definitely benefits from that. Really enjoying this, although I’m kinda torn on big life

  13. My issue with Big Life is that it’s over before it starts. I wish it was like, 2-3 minutes longer and took some kind of interesting turn like HDYWM does.

Just not feeling this, love the previous two records but this just isn’t for me.

So I definitely hear a difference between the version that's on Spotify and the version on Apple Music. I actually enjoy the Apple Music mix a lot more? Especially in Atmos.

Cool that he revisited Steel Train days in "Strange Behavior"

I didn’t like the new Behavior until I listened with headphones and Dolby atmos. I felt like I was Jack playing and singing the song, it was cool. Still prefer the original. But this whole album is really growing on me.

  18. Y'all weren't kidding about the songs getting progressively quieter, at least until "Stop Making This Hurt." I had turned up the volume on "Secret Life" and was startled when SMTH started lol

I like this album a lot. I also don’t understand how every single person seems to be able to listen to albums in Atmos; does everyone but me really have Atoms ready speakers/headphones? Or am I still misunderstanding how that works?

    Excellent songs:

    How Dare You Want More
    45
    Stop Making This Hurt

    Very good songs:

    91
    Don't Go Dark
    Secret Life

    OK songs:

    Chinatown
What'd I Do With All This Faith?

    Meh:

    Strange Behavior
    Big life

My expectations are we eventually get a solo JA masterpiece, and sure this isn’t it, but hit rate similar to Gone Now for sure.

I'd flip around the order, but I think these tiers are about right. Couldn't agree less about the comparison to Gone Now.

  22. Yeah, idk how I felt about this on first listen. I think I mostly enjoyed it, but understand with/agree with the production criticisms as well as it feeling kind of sketch-like compared to Gone Now, which is pretty easily his best in terms of fleshed out weirdness. Wasn't a fan of "Strange Behavior" (never heard the original) and "How Dare You Want More" is a little corny for my tastes. "Big Life" literally grew on me as I was listening. Love the opening track. Just kind of all over the place, which at least bodes well for repeat listens.
