Not finished yet but the album could have used another song or two like Call Me After Midnight (!!) earlier in the track list. I’m liking this a lot but some of the songs definitely feel like they follow the same midtempo formula, one after the other. re: we are going to know each other, I need more of that screamy jack haha
Individually I like each song, but boy does it feel samey most of the time. Production is really great again, so that's a big positive.
First listen was kind of a snooze fest, didn’t love what he did to March (Call Me After Midnight) either.
Won't hear the new one until tonight but I've been listening to the other albums today. Those first two will always be so special for me. I always thought Strange Desire was my favorite and in a way it may still be the one I feel a stronger connection to, but Gone Now is such a special album. I think the more the Bleachers sound has shifted, the more Gone Now works as the centerpiece, if that makes sense. Anyway, still very excited to hear this tonight. I really love the singles so I'm optimistic this will work for me as a whole.
It’s definitely a producer album. I’m excited to listen with headphones but on my third listen and the homogeneity really drags this down and it doesn’t help that most of the songs pick one (slow) lane and then stay in it from beginning to end. I think it’s a decent album that relies too heavily on its absolutely pristine production with a few good ideas scattered throughout. He’s gotten really bad at sequencing too! also not sure what he was thinking with those vocal effects on we are going to know each other lol
I actually love this. Feels like a perfect "hot summer nights" album. I'm sure I'll be spinning it a lot for the next six months. Also, you guys didn't like "Alma Mater"?!
I thought Strange Desire was by far the best, but seeing them both in full back to back nights really elevated Gone Now for me. It's still absolutely bizarre to me that Hate That You Know Me and Don't Take the Money aren't in the opposite order, but a couple minor sequencing gripes aside I think it's equally good as the first.
I had skipped the singles on this one, but I really loved that song hearing it for the first time today.
I have it stuck in my head constantly until I go to listen to it again and hate it all over again lol
I think my initial lukewarm reaction to "Alma Mater" was largely because it's so unlike "Modern Girl." Hearing it live and sitting with it for a while really helped. My first impression of the album is really strong too, with a couple exceptions that I hope grow on me.
On my second listen. I don't think this is boring at all, these songs are actually pretty busy? I like the little shout outs to all the individual band members. "Me Before You" channeling "Secret Garden." I feel like there's little easter eggs like that all over this thing but I need to keep listening.
Wow. Very strong first listen! It comes across as very subtle and earnest to me. I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time with this.
First full album of theirs I have listened to. This is really good, just a nice chill album. Favourites are still Modern Girls and Tiny Moves tbf.
I can’t help but roll my eyes whenever some social media influencer pulls that Rodney Mullen speech out of the context of skateboarding, and unfortunately this is no different haha.
