Just spun this and Strange Desire this morning while doing some writing and it makes me feel so good.
Just got back from their show tonight and holy shit, somehow this (the 4th time) time seeing them was the best yet. They have been able to take their live show to the level of stadium concerts, in a small club. Truly believe they could fill a stadium in the same way fun. used to. The bass overall sounded so much bigger and stronger than in the past and it really worked. Just a fantastic live performance
It's been really amazing watching this project grow. I completely agree it's just gotten better and better since it started. It really does feel massive, even if it's in a small venue. At the very least, they should be getting 6 pm slots at festivals and playing big theaters within a couple years.
Of course AFTER the fact do I learn that I was in the audience with Carly Rae Jepsen, Rachel Antonoff, Mae Whitman, Sarah Ramos and my personal hero Darren Hayes. RIP me
Jack looks so insanely happy on stage lately. The crowds on this tour have been super into the shows and the band is eating it up. I can't get enough of this band. Denver is in just over a week and I bought tickets the other day to see them in Kansas City in November.
a few stray observations... this is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year, top tier music, but I do wish there was a way to toggle on/off the dialogue and ambiance, sometimes I want to hear the songs themselves... ...which is one of the reasons I think I loved all the new songs live even more, they are HUGE live and super exciting. "All My Heroes" always makes me want to sing along "I can't believe I captured your heart" during "I'll be something better yet" "Goodmorning" is one of my favorite songs on here, but I don't like it as much on headphones as I do via a bigger stereo, the extreme panning of vocals and music is a bit jarring
This album really was huge live. I already liked it but seeing these songs live took my appreciation for it up another level. Funny you mention the dialogue. My girlfriend can't stand the "I've got to get myself back home soon" especially with how frequently it pops up haha
I really like the dialogue as part of the whole artistic message and appreciate the reason for them being there.... but it would be cool to have an option like commentary for a movie.... swap it off sometimes ha
Definitely agree with this. For some albums it really adds to the message but it feels a little out of place on the album. Thematically relevant but not sonically...if that makes sense
OK, so I listened to this album while going for a run tonight... and it's dark out, very dark... There were multiple times that the noises and dialogue and babies scared the shit outta me. In retrospect, not the best outside-by-yourself-at-night album
I love the dialogue but can see how people think it's annoying too. I mostly love how it ties things back to Strange Desire, and how if he continues it the band has an overarching narrative. It gives the impression to me that the whole album is kind of someone's thoughts. Like someone thinks/says "I've got to get myself back home soon" and then the album is their thoughts exploring that feeling. I also think it's great when listening to the album front to back, but agree it's a little jarring when you're just listening to an individual song. There's a strong argument to be made that it was executed better on Strange Desire, or at least less obtrusively.
