I'm really glad I only listened to Don't Take The Money as a single because Everybody Lost Somebody just broke me.
I'm still only about halfway through but I am loving this. It is so quirky, and while I understand why some of those quirks might be a turn off for some, they work for me. Jack is such an eccentric, unique, creative vocalist and I really adore it.
After my first listen, I think this is alright. There wasn't anything about it that made me actively dislike it. I just feel indifferent towards a lot of it. Hoping that changes with subsequent listens though.
Pretty much how I feel. Loved the singles and pre-release tracks, but nothing else on this has really struck with me yet. Hoping it's just taking a little time.
The first half of this album is rock solid, the second half is a clusterfuck. Let's Get Married is grating, Goodbye is twice as long as it should be, Nothing is U is forgettable and out of place. Foreign Girls is great though.
Defend "Let's Get Married!" I don't like to admit this because I love CRJ, but my least favorite is prob "Hate That You Know Me." It underutilizes her.
The one-two punch of Don't Take The Money and Everybody Lost Somebody is unreal. So come on motherfucker, you survived, you gotta give yourself a break I needed that lyric today
I could do without the 'bad bad people don't live here' lines, they're just offputting to me, but other than that, the song is such a joy.
the rest of the record turned out to be hate that you know me/i miss those days level as opposed to don't take the money/everybody lost somebody level, which is somewhat disappointing. still really like this tho. really dig the vibe. it makes me feel like i'm walking around some rustic new york city neighborhood during an eighties summer as a much cooler individual. and let's get married is a jam.
Gonna listen a few more times as I write my review. First impression is this is a top-ten contender even in this stacked year and while there aren't any songs as good as "Like a River Runs" or with as big superstar potential as "I Wanna Get Better," it's more consistent than his debut both thematically and quality wise.
Super good album. Only one listen so far, but this has a real shot at my AOTY Edit: Had time to read the thread and get everyone else thoughts on the album, and I also fall in the "likes Lets Get Married column". There wasn't anything on this record that disappointed me.
I like this a lot, but "Don't Take the Money" is still the highlight for me. I'm going to play the shit out of that song this summer.
Driving to work and on my lunch I've gotten about halfway through. Here to also defend "Let's Get Married"
just poking my head in to say i enjoyed this way more than i thought i would. great album. not sure how long it'll hold up as the year continues but this will get a good amount of returns for at least the forseeable future.
Listening to All My Heroes on better speakers right now, and holy hell that song shines. Might be my favorite so far of the not previously released ones (but that's going to change at least 6 times).
Enjoyed this a bit more on my second listen. Don't Take The Money and Everybody Lost Somebody are the clear highlights for me so far
