100% It’s only on week two. It’ll be in less screens and in their smaller houses probably, but it’ll be there
We have a 24 screen theater here and sometimes I am shocked by the movies that are still playing. Sometimes stuff lingers for months.
This seems to be a good argument for why theaters are failing. 24 screens seems to be like 18 too many
That is definitely a lot of screens. The one I worked at only had eight houses, but that sucks because when movies like Star Wars come out, Disney demands that they have at least three screens, which would force us to push smaller films out.
the theater next to me has 4 screens and they play like 8 movies at a time. Just less showtimes for each movie per day. Seems to be the right balance. Is it a pain to change movies for a screen like it used to be or is it just a file you pick on a computer?
It’s really easy. We would get physical hard drives and ingest them into the main server, which is easy enough, but most theaters now bypass that and get satellite downloads. Then once it’s in the main server you just select the file you want and send it to the desired screen.
Saw this again over the weekend. Definitely my favorite movie of 2017 so far, and it turns out that Arrival was my favorite movie of 2016.
Our theater has 12 screens and we regularly miss out on smaller movies because of it, which sucks. Honestly I'm expecting we'll cut the number of showings down to 2-3 a day next week and then it'll be gone.
How far off can we be from releasing most film straight to streaming services? I want that! Even if I don't want theaters to go away or anything. I just want what I want now and I don't think that's asking a lot in the current market.
The 24 screen theater does mean we get some more smaller films, but mostly they just show the blockbusters on more screens. It is 45 minutes from my house and I make the hike for special occasions (there are 7 closer theaters) but if it isn't in English or if it is a little too weird it still skips us.
I'm lucky enough to have a variety of theaters within 15-20min. One theater exclusively shows non-blockbuster/smaller films (right now they're showing Victoria and Abdul, Battle of the Sexes, and Loving Vincent), and the others I frequent have a decent mix of mainstream and smaller films.
Lol, I'm pretty bummed. I interviewed at this Arthouse Theatre that is super close to my house and they wanted to hire me, but the pay was garbage so I declined. It's unfortunate because they are the only theatre nearby that consistently shows smaller, independent features and now I don't want to go in there because I feel like it'd be weird or awkward
Nah you gotta keep going in there lookin' all upbeat and shit so they know what they missed out on because movie theaters don't pay their employees well
Well, I have a tentative interview at a chain theater which will no doubt pay me more, but I come from an independently owned place so the Art Theatre was more up my alley. As far as pay goes, I was the hiring manager at the theatre I worked at previously and most of the people applying were kids still in high school who had no work experience and would be fine with minimum wage. Then, every once in awhile you'll get adults looking for work who have more experience and more responsibilities and so I'd start them off at a higher wage which turned out to be a gamble as some would suck and not work nearly as hard as some of the kids and I'm like, "why am I paying you more?" lol. But yeah, on the whole, I agree, theatre employees should get paid much more. Do you get vacation time or benefits? I didn't get vacation until I became a manager and even then no benefits were offered unless I became salaried. Dude we didn't even get holiday pay, which is pretty fucked up considering the fact that working holidays is required. Apparently they are able to get away with not offering certain amenities because technically it falls under the "entertainment business" where you are basically allowed to abuse your employees. @I Am Mick Sorry for the rant.
Wish movies were shown for a while over here but they generally come in and out in no time and since I have only one good cinema near me the choice is even more limited. Quite frankly a miracle I've seen as many films at the cinema that I have.
First viewing was just my gf and I in a theatre with about 6 other people our age except a middle age couple who just had to sit right next to us. They left right as K found Decker and the wife muttered as they left “weirdest movie I’ve ever seen”. Second viewing was similar though luckily no plebs sat next to us and this time everyone left by the end except a middle aged couple who decided to loudly exclaim “that sucks, that’s so stupid” right as it cut to credits. This movie wasn’t that hard to grasp was it? I mean, really?!
These comments remind me of when I went to go see There Will Be Blood years back. Me and a pal were in the theatre with an elderly couple and a young couple. Both of them left before the end of the movie. One of them literally said "there hasn't even been any blood."
Oh wow. Yikes. Yeah I mean, there will unfortunately always be that large group of people who just wanna laugh, cry, be scared while they eat popcorn and be spoonfed plot points through a lightning fast paced movie. Worse today with the “iPhone generation”.
