They both do very similar things with the camera such as allowing for the scene to continue even when the primary characters are out of focus or have left the scene entirely. It might not be long, twenty seconds here, ten seconds there, but it adds a lot to world building.
Just the richness of the world and the environmental/imagery-based storytelling in both are so strong. Granted, BR2049 has the benefit of the first film to build off of while CoM only had a novel that most who saw the film probably never read, but still. Also they both succeed wonderfully at selling their respective gritty, dystopian worlds as totally believable.
this was such a beautiful film. compliments the first one so well and builds on the world while having a great story in it's own right at it's core. really happy with this. definitely plan to see it again.
Judging by the US opening weekend this film isn't going to do all that well box office wise, which is a big shame.
Just saw a matinee of this today. Goddamn it's so good. Fantastic sequel - but also could stand on it's own (in my opinion). What a great story.
I saw this in an Italian theater yesterday and it was packed at the 10pm showing. Hope this picks up some steam stateside.
All depends how much it drops in the second weekend after a lackluster opening, if it is in the 50-70% range it will be unlikely to crack $100m.
That's really disappointing tbh regardless about how I feel about it critically from a plot perspective. I really really wish it and others like it could be a popular film. I had a lot of fun with it.
I was underwhelmed by the score tbh. It was really in the forefront that's for sure. and I was expecting to like it a lot. When the brassy and overdriven CS80 lines are allowed to cut through it's cool and nostalgic. But unfortunately what it's cutting through is new-standard modern reverb drone. There's not a whole lot of memorability to it except that it's mixed loud. The original BRs score... well there's not a lot that hasn't been said. It's truly great.
It’s disappointing that it’s not doing well but I can understand why people aren’t flocking to see this. Maybe it’s the runtime, maybe it’s because a good chunk of people never watched the original, maybe it’s both. This was really a film for the fans and film buffs if I had to be honest.
If you didn't know about the original film, you would have no idea what this movie is about, so why would audiences turn out? That is the consequence of our destructive obsession with avoiding spoilers.
I posted on my insta that I thought it was a fantastic movie and one of my coworkers just replied “uhhh I hated it.” I asked her at work the next day and she said it was “weird and boring.”
It's probably not going to be great for the industry that this movie isn't doing well. This kinda seemed like an opportunity to capture on a nostalgic cult phenomenon that was conceived completely honestly and without revision of integrity. I think the general weirdness, nudity, color palette, retro ness, runtime, long cuts, less dialogue can attest to that. That the risks were not appreciated will be made note of at all the pop studios.
I just ran across a thread on synthesizers subreddit about the score.... Looks like most there don't like it very much... They're a pretty intense bunch on there when it comes to synth music.
I thought the score was great. I enjoyed the melodic parts and the more droney parts. When K and Joi fly by the sea wall headed to the junk town there’s a ~classic blade runner~ sounding synth line that I really liked. On the other hand when K is eating at that table and the three girls walk over to him there’s a repeating mechanical sound that sounded like a motorcycle revving and it was really unsettling. Really made the city feel like it was just a massive noisy mess that would be unbearable to live in.
It would be interesting to see how much of that budget was devoted to Harrison Ford. They gave him everything to stumble around as Han Solo one more time, so he probably made sure he got paid again.
Considering the fact that we are talking about its financial performance, most likely the people in the conversation. This is a weird post.
Same here and outside of the fact it is a sequel to a 35 year old film I can't fathom why it hasn't done as well as it needed to as the runtime isn't all that much longer than say a Marvel film and it has actors that are well known so it is puzzling. Hopefully it makes it big internationally, China has been the saviour of the international box office this year for several films be they good or bad.
There are elements that feel like how Ghost in the Shell should have felt. Edit: I know that’s not directly related to what you were saying, just something I thought when watching the movie
Anything with a big movie star overperforms there. The newest Terminator flopped here but was a bigger success there.
